Apple Pie Eating House and Bakery – Amblesidevisit Zefirellis everytime im in ambleside, always had a fantastic meal and evening, highly recommend the rainforest pizza. advise booking first, especially on the weekend.
Zeffirellis Pizzeria – AmblesideFor anyone considering going to this dire cafe, think again! The coffee and food on offer were admittedly OK, but the service was absolutely appalling. We should have realised before we even entered this awful establishment that the reception would be dreadful - the poorly worded notice on the door prohibiting prams and buggies did not suggest that the cafe would be family friendly - but the offhand and aggressive attitude of the manager was our main complaint. Even though we spent a reasonable amount, she refused to refill our small water glasses without charge (because it would cost her to wash the glasses). She was unnecessarily rude and undiplomatic, and we have advised numerous friends with guest houses in the area not to visit this hostile cafe.
Cafe Treff – AmblesideIf you visit Ambleside I 'd like you to join the great meals here because it's real and very tasty. The staffs are friendly. If I chance to come back I will visit again.
Doi Intanon Thai Restaurant – AmblesideWe stumbled on this place by accident as every other Restaurant was fully booked. It was our first wedding anniversary so we were looking for something special and this place certainly delivered. The staff were excellent and really seemed to know the menu and the food... Well all I can say it's a very long time since I've eaten any thing so good in the UK! Perfectly cooked and presented. Would definitely suggest paying a visit to this place if you want to have an excellent meal in a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. 10/10
Matthews Bistro – AmblesideAfter reading numerous positive reviews on the Drunken Duck, felt I had to comment on how disappointed my husband and I were when we dined in the restaurant recently. The bar was lovely with a nice relaxed atmosphere, can't complain about the beer either. However we were shown to our table in the 'new' annexe of the restaurant and was greeted first of all by a rather unpleasant smell. I admit I have a rather sensitive nose, but the smell continued for the duration of our meal. Not a good start. Our food was average but extremely over priced. Seasoning was generally clumsy and the additional vegetables we ordered (herby potatoes) were boring. Maybe they were having an 'off' night ? certainly shan't return for a second opinion.
Drunken Duck Inn – AmblesideWorse Chinese restaurant I have ever been to. Waiters were rude, seemed to be a rush to get us out off there as quickly as possible and snatched plates from our table we have not finished. everything was so oily and full of MSG. 20 pp for a meal for six which had a starter of chicken and sweet corn soup ( which has probably been kept in a warmer all day), unnaturally red looking red fatty pork ribs for a second course and a for main course a starch abundant greasy selection. forced us to pay 10% service charge for the rude service. Do not go there. Takeaway quality food.
Jade Garden – AmblesideExcellent all-round menu ~ in particular the cake/sweet section with it's fabulous cheesecake selection. The Swiss Brulee Cheesecake is perfection on a plate. Service is also very good and this cafe is always our first port of call whenever we are on a walk that includes Ambleside...
Cafe Treff – AmblesideAfter reading many positive reviews I booked a table at the Log House restaurant. The restaurant had a very pleasant atmosphere but we found the staff rather unhelpful. For starters I had the bread with dips and my partner had the goat’s cheese tartlet. His was rather bland and I found two hairs in my starter! After I found the first hair I asked for a new pot of dip assuming that this is where the hair had come from. After the second hair we realised they were actually in the bread. We politely and discreetly informed the waitress about the second hair but received no real apology. We were very surprised that such an occurrence was not more of an embarrassment for them. Our mains were good, I had the sirloin and my partner had the fish and chips. Both were enjoyable however my partner and I had somewhat lost our appetites after the hairs! Throughout or meal we were not asked if we required drinks refills or if everything was ok with or meals, a few basic questions that you would expect from a waitress in a Michelin recommended restaurant. When we received the bill we did not receive any apology for the problems with my starter, we had not been charged for the starter but this was not explained to us. We were also over-charged for our mains. A simple apology and explanation that the starter had been left off the bill would have been sufficient but I was disappointed in the way the staff handled the matter. I understand the restaurant has an AA award and has been recommended in the Michelin guide. Perhaps they worked hard to receive such recognition but have since let themselves slip. I was very disappointed with the Log House and I will not be returning.
Log House Restaurant – AmblesideThis is a lovely (tastefully furnished/decorated) cafe situated on the main road through Ambleside. The staff are very courteous and pleasant and the food (in particular the Strawberry Swiss Brulee Cheesecake!) is excellent. The menu is varied and (for the area) competitively priced. We only found the cafe by accident during a walk from Troutbeck ~ we'll certainly be making a return visit...
Cafe Treff – AmblesideThe coffee was fine, but the owner is HORRIFIC! We were told we couldn't take our push chair in, which would be understandable if the place was heaving, but it was 5pm on a December evening and there were 4 other people in there. The owner ranted at us and was extremely rude and not at all reasonable. 7 adults and 2 children bought coffees, hot chocolates, flapjacks etc, but we were told we were not allowed to bring our own food in; this was referring to 3 Organix crisps (baby snacks) being eaten by our 9 month old. I can not recommend this place for customer service at all! there are plenty of great places to eat and drink in Ambleside - go there instead!
Cafe Treff – AmblesideThe Apple Pie looked inviting and was nicely decorated throughout. There was an ample number of staff and a few diners. Having been greeted by a member of staff on our entrance we took a seat, browsed the menu and waited to be served. After 15 minutes, no one came to take our order or acknowledged us again. We waited patiently for a further 10 minutes trying to politely gain the waiters attention, but we were continued to be ignored. We finally requested for our order to be taken when we were told we would have to wait until they had taken the order of another customer that had only walked in 5 minutes earlier! After waiting for 25 minutes, being ignored despite more than adequate staffing levels and now feeling rather hungry we got up and left and eventually find a very nice cafe called 'Lucy's on a Plate' which had staff that knew how to give good customer service. Unfortunately I cannot pass comment on any other areas of the Apple Pie only that the Staff are incredibly rude and that I will not be going back.
Apple Pie Eating House and Bakery – AmblesideWe visited the Glass House in early October 07 for lunch, and I can honestly say it was one of the most terrible dining experiences I have had the misfortune to endure. It all seemed quite promising to begin with. Physically, the restaurant looks great. The staff are friendly and helpful and the wine list is impressive. And then the food arrived. Starters of prawns with chorizo and beetroot with goats cheese were edible enough, although these simple dishes would have been more difficult to get wrong than right. This underwhelming start to the meal turned out to be the highlight - the main courses were genuinely inedible. I should make clear at this point that my partner and I are very keen foodies and the very opposite of fussy eaters. As such, I cannot remember the last time, prior to our lunch at the Glass House, that I literally could not bring myself to eat a meal which was in front of me. My partner had a roasted chicken breast with mustard mash, while I opted for a gourmet style burger on focaccia. My burger arrived literally swimming in a very odd sauce which was tooth-rottingly sweet and extremely overpowering. The burger itself was so overseasoned with various herbs (plus a very strange taste which I couldn't identify as anything beyond soap) that there was absolutely no hint of beef flavour left. So sweet and hideously flavoured was the sauce that I was actually unable to stomach it, and since everything on the plate was liberally doused in the stuff the entire meal was inedible. My boyfriend's meal was similarly over-flavoured - the mustard mash had such an enormous amount of mustard in it that after a few mouthfuls he couldn't taste anything at all. I have no idea what is wrong with this chef's palate. Perhaps the two cigarettes that he smoked outside the restaurant (in full view of the lunchtime diners) in the space of an hour didn't help. Or perhaps he has some strange disorder which prevents him from tasting flavours which stop short of having to be labelled "industrial strength". Either way, judging from our experience he is most certainly in the wrong job. I fear I will run out of adjectives if I try to further express my feelings for the Glass House. I sincerely hope that the management realises sooner rather than later that their restaurant can be as pretty and as friendly as it likes; ultimately it will be judged on it's food. And at the moment, that food is appalling. Stay clear.
The Fulling Mill – Amblesidesuperb all round, great food, great prices. Extremely friendly staff. Couldn't fault it. Great Thai beer too.
Doi Intanon Thai Restaurant – AmblesideThe greek salad was very tiny, miniscule chopped cucumber, tom, onion. The feta cheese had no flavour. The vegetables used for the dips were so thinly cut, you'd never know it was celery and carrot. The tzatziki was bland, no flavour. Best thing was the wine. You can taste whichever you like. Which was very good. prices were quite expensive too, for the quality. My partner had the steak, it was like something from a greasy cafe. Even our clothes stank of grease the next morning.
Lucy4 Wine Bar and Bistro – AmblesideExcellent value, particularly during 'Happy Hour'. Delicious food and very good service. Excellent vegetarian menu
China Cottage – AmblesideThis hotel/restaurant has really friendly staff and a great homely feeling. The two owners are very talkative and you get a great buzz off all the staff and the whole place feels more personal. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anybody looking for a tranquil afternoon tea in the gardens or stay longer for the superb 3 course dinner. 5* in my opinion!
Rothay Manor – AmblesideI really dont know why people rave about this place I have been to loads of thai restaurants the inside does not even look very thai english flowers on table and very english looking menu on front very unimpressive inside the only thing thai was the waitress in thai costume, had weeping tiger which is always served sizzling and hot it was plain beef with salad and cold sauce separate for over nine pounds not worth it did mention this but the owner was not bothered will not recommend this restaurant to any friends and will not return there again it was recommended on internet proves you can trust people comments always these people obviously have never been to a thai before.
