Fire up your sat nav, type in NE43 7SW and motor on down to the home of the best Sunday Roast in Britain. The Feathers Inn at Hedley-on-the-Hill, near Stocksfield, is about 15 minutes west of Newcastle and has just picked up the award from a judging panel that included food critic Charles Campion and top chef and Gordon Ramsay protégé Mark Sargeant. They cited top-quality locally sourced and foraged ingredients, perfectly cooked roast meats, a wide selection of side dishes - including great Yorkshire puddings and shrapnel roasties - and a dedication to catering for different dietary requirements as the factors that made The Feathers stand out from the crowd. The pub is celebrating 10 years trading this year so Happy Anniversary!

The award's sponsors, Unilever Food Solutions, conducted research showing that UK diners get through 1.2 billion roasts a year and that 40% of people think that roast dinners should be on pub menus every day of the week. And one new Manchester pub seems to be on the same wavelength. The Barking Dog in Urmston only opened in June but has already built up quite a reputation for its pies. Owner Mark Rackham has now developed a Sunday Roast Dinner pie which includes roast beef, gravy, broccoli, carrots and cauliflower inside a pie case and topped with a Yorkshire pud and served with roast potatoes, sweetcorn, peas and gravy. It checks in at £9.50 and is proving so popular they are planning a Christmas Dinner pie. Watch this space!
