The Black Swan, Hollins Green

It may be in the heart of the Cheshire countryside but The Black Swan is a pretty well-connected pub. Situated midway between Manchester and Warrington, it’s just 13 miles from Manchester city centre and minutes away from Junction 21 of the M6 where the Thelwall Viaduct crosses the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey. But this pub and restaurant with rooms in the tranquil village of Hollins Green is a whole world away from the hustle and bustle of the city or the motorway.

The Black Swan celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2017 and to mark the occasion the pub underwent an exciting new makeover in January. Cosy new seating areas were added to the spacious dining room to help create family friendly spaces and the bar area now has a completely new look with a pool table added. And outside the children’s play area is set for a revamp ready for the summer months.

Hand-in-hand with the refurb a new menu has been introduced adding gourmet choices to the popular British classics. The new Gourmet Menu is available from 5pm to 9pm, Wednesday to Saturday, and offers a range of main courses with optional wine pairings. So you could try the Lime Cured Salmon with cucumber gel, sauce vierge and micro red basil paired with a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Or perhaps Honey Roasted Duck Breast with potato dauphinoise, chargrilled white chicory, celeriac puree and tender stem broccoli matched with an Argentinian Malbec. Or for a bit of a kick Curried Monkfish Tail with pancetta, sag aloo potatoes, carrot and coconut puree and mango and coriander salsa paired with a glass of Pinot Grigio Blush.

The main menu is served daily from 12pm-9pm and offers plenty of choice including favourites like the famous Black Swan Steak Burger and their award-winning fish and chips as well as steaks and salads and daily specials. There is also a special lunch menu for lighter bites, a Sunday menu featuring beef, pork, chicken and vegetarian roasts, a kids menu and a breakfast menu. The pub also has a regular roster of events including live music, quiz nights and poker nights and is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Fourteen well-appointed boutique rooms make The Black Swan an ideal choice too for an overnight stay, whether you’re in the Manchester area on business, breaking a motorway journey or just fancy a night away . Prices start from £65 and facilities include satellite TV and wifi. When the sun shines, there’s lovely terrace and children’s play area too.
