The Idle Rocks in St Mawes in Cornwall has been named 2018 Seafood Restaurant of The Year. The annual competition, run by The Caterer magazine in association with Seafish, highlights the best use of seafood across all categories of restaurant.

The judges were impressed by the breadth of the menu, the variety of locally sourced fish species used, the excellent customer service and the dedication to staff training and provenance from Head Chef Guy Owen.

The 19-room Relais & Chateaux hotel sits in a beautiful location on the waterfront at St Mawes and the current menu at the 65-cover restaurant includes St Mawes oyster, Ponzu and apple; Percuil scallop, smoked bacon chowder and Singapore crab. The kitchen only uses fish that is in season and available from local suppliers such as Fish for Thought and the Wild Oyster Company, which fishes Cornish native oysters on the Fal river. Much of the fish on the menu is rod- or line-caught and less popular species such as gurnard, whiting and silver mullet often feature.
