The Chocolate Works – ClitheroeOne of my favourite pubs! Beautiful location in a unique village Downham
Assheton Arms – ClitheroeHad an excellent lunch here today. And I also really enjoyed hearing the passion of the owner has for food and clean, healthy, organic food. Everything is made in-house and I took some of their gorgeous bread away. if you care about what you put in your mouth and where it comes from then eat here. They now have bedrooms too!
Greendale View Kitchen and B&B – ClitheroeSaturday lunch at the newly garlanded AA English Restaurant of the Year. It’s a real achievement for a Lancashire country pub to get this prestigious national award so we were really keen to give it a go. Finding it is half the battle (it’s in the tiny hamlet of Wiswell between Whalley and Clitheroe). Then you need to find an on-road parking spot which isn’t easy either. But it’s well worth the effort. The place has a lovely feel, mixing the old with the new décor-wise, and there was a choice of menus at lunchtime, including the full tasting menu if you really want to go for it. Lots of great-looking dishes and I went for the hake as a starter (served with a cheese fondue and ham sauce) and the mountain hare as a main (with aged parmesan, blackberries and whipped polenta). Great wine selection too (including by the glass) if that’s your thing. If I’m totally honest, it was a bit rich for lunchtime but that’s just my preference. And the service was a bit spotty. But minor quibbles really. Give it a go yourself.
Freemasons At Wiswell – ClitheroeWe went yesterday for the first time and the food is exceptional. The minute you enter you feel the wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and lovely decor. The service is amongst the best I have ever encountered and the staff were friendly and professional. I had the Pan-fried Pigeon Breast followed by Steak and Ale Pudding and my girlfriend had Smoked Mackerel also followed by the Steak and Ale Pudding. The pint of Aspinall Witch is a joy to sample also. The pub is dogfriendly and staff made a real fuss of our Fox-red Labrador, providing water and treats for the well-execised mutt. This is a real gem of a place and I highly recommend a visit.
Aspinall Arms – ClitheroeFirst time at The Three Fishes for quite some time. Pleased to report that standards have not slipped and we had a thoroughly enjoyable lunch. What they excel at is well-delivered comfort food that really hits the spot and on our table the Venison scotch egg, Rabbit pie, Fish & chips and Fish pie all got the thumbs up. Wine list is good with lots of choice (as you would expect from a Northcote sibling) and also very good value. We chose a bottle of Chablis (which was also available by the glass, ranging from taster 70ml to third of a bottle 250ml). Quibbles? Only one minor one – you need to go to the bar to pay the bill.
The Three Fishes – ClitheroeThis is an excellent pub all round. From the food, service, location and its lovely interior. Has everything you would expect from a top end dining pub. My dish was a strange choice for a grim day - chorizo, squid and salad with gespatchio but it really was good! Robert the young man that served me was a very well trained waiter and a thoroughly nice chap. I liked the refit as it looks like a old pub with character and charm but its modern at the same time. Lovely part of the world by the river.
Aspinall Arms – ClitheroeLovely pub with great views over the countryside. fancy staying in one of their yurts. Food was fab.
The Red Pump Inn – ClitheroeHave to comment on what a lovely lunch we had at the Freemasons last weekend. It was totally on spec -- had taken my mother shopping in Whalley and thought we would give this place a try. So glad we did. No reservation but the staff were welcoming and very courteous. Gave us a lovely table and we chose from the set-price lunch menu (2 courses for £15), both of us starting with the Pearl barley risotto and following up with a melt-in-your-mouth slow-cooked lamb dish. Food of the highest quality and great value. Good choice of wines by the glass too which we took full advantage of. Can’t wait to go back in the evening and try the a la carte.
Freemasons At Wiswell – ClitheroeWe visited La Vespa last week and was talked into what the waiter recommend. As we were originally going for the meal deal The bill came to £95 with two course and two bottles of wine and the waiter couldn't do enough for us. So this week we went for the meal deal with one bottle of wine, the bill came to £50 bearing in mind the meal deal is £29.95. So I thought maybe the wine didn't apply with the meal deal any longer. So I checked online and it does so we were charged for the wine on top of the meal deal price. And this visit the waiter couldn't be bothered with us. I'm assuming that it was because we were having the cheapo menu. Very disappointed.
La Vespa – ClitheroeThis place has taken the Ribble Valley/Trough of Bowland by storm! It always was I a great spot housed in a fine building with character. Since it has been taken over by a more canny operator it appears to be very successful. Great food, wine and beer in a lovely location by the river. A great beer garden for the warmer months. Well done to the Aspinall Arms.
Aspinall Arms – ClitheroeLove love this place. Had a gorgeous lunchtime meal there yesterday looking out a beautiful views of the Lancashire countryside. A regular haunt that I always recommend to others so I thought I would do that on Sugarvine too :)
Inn at Whitewell – ClitheroeLuscious fish pie with green beans doused in chilli. All topped off with a couple of pints of Blonde Witch. Tip top!
Assheton Arms – ClitheroeMy partner and I had a great meal at the Assheton Arms after a trip up a very cold Pendle Hill. Lovely pub and village!
Assheton Arms – ClitheroeThe Higher Buck in Waddington is a great foodie pub. It looks lovely and serves top notch food. Loved my duck and chorizo wrap for lunch last week!
