My wife and I had been at a garden centre and decided to have a late Saturday lunch. We might ordinarily have gone to the Punchbowl but decided to try the Horns Inn as we hadn't been for years. What a mistake! The staff had suspended the normal Saturday lunch menu and had a shorter but far more expensive menu from which to choose - not for what we wanted but I guess as there was a festival going on in the village they had seen the chance to make a few pounds extra by getting additional punters to buy into a menu different from that advertised on the website. Nothing went well, my wife's risotto was heavy and accompanied by what looked like slabs of Tesco Value garlic bread and which tasted like cardboard. The taste of my sausage and mash was OK but it was just a taste as portions were awful and not even enlivened by a vegetable. Paying over the top for substandard fare isn't the way forward. However, I certainly won't be going back there so problem solved. Oh! When staff training comes around ensure that you don't only tell your staff to ask if the meal is alright on a regular basis but tell them that they should actually want to hear the answer and when they do hear that people haven't had a great dining experience to do something more constructive than 'Oh, sorry to hear that!'
