Ahad – GosforthI was tempted by the fish soup, but £13.95?! The waiter confessed he thought it a bit pricey, but then again had everything in it, mussels, king prawns, salmon, white fish ... and thyme - not sure about thyme with fish. I had beef sirloin fillets instead, with sweet shallots in creamy horseradish sauce, £12.95. The beef was excellent, very tender, reddish pink, even oozing a little blood - I find when you ask for "rare" meat it's too often light brown. The sauce was a bit boring, should have been hotter and less creamy, shallots very nice, veg side dish good apart from the slightly slimy potatoes. My partner had her usual carbonara, which she declared well worth £6.95, and unusually heavy on egg yolk - not unpleasantly so. Seemed very busy for a Wednesday night, good for them - mixed crowd, friendly atmosphere, rather odd swirly paintwork on the walls, and retro salt and pepper pots. Honestly not sure if they were deliberately retro. Didn't have the nerve to ask. I'll never make a proper critic. House wine £9.95 a bottle.
