I love Malmaison chain, the decor, the opulence the feeling of all embracing intimacy- so i was looking forward to eating in the Brasserie in the new Liverpool Malamison. I was sadly, slightly disappointed. Booking was fine and was accommodated for 7.45pm. We had a drink in the bar first, who passed the bill on to the restaurant so we could carry our drinks through to the brasserie. Seating was a little low at the table, but comfortable. My dining partner was seated in a corner next to a brick wall which left her a little limited for people watching! Starters were very nice, risotto and crispy duck pancakes. Mains of steak frites and swordfish were chosen. I had the swordfish with Mediterranean veg- the fish was over cooked slightly and the veg- sparse at best. I was told the steak was fine. Dessert was apple, pear and bramble crumble which was delicious. Choice from the menu would cover most tastes but was a little unadventurous, perhaps a bit more variety would be better. Service initially was good but as the brasserie got busier, tailed off a little, waiting 30 mins after being given dessert menu to receiving dessert was frustrating. The bill was wrong when it eventually arrived, overcharged by £35, and included a discretionary 10% service charge. After the bill was corrected we were further delayed in attempting to pay for it. These last few point although not major did add a rather bitter note to what had been a perfectly pleasant dining experience. Surroundings 7/10 Menu choice 6/10 Food 6.5/10 Service 5/10 Price 5/10 I'd go again, but would advise an earlier dining time when the staff may be able to cope with the number of people in the place.
