Great fish restaurant. Myself & my partner booked last minute on a Friday evening. Glad we did as was very busy as the evening went on. We had the fish platter & the whole Dover sole. Both excellent, a real treat. Service was a wee bit slow but our very nice waitress explained they were one short that evening. You could tell, they were run off their feet! Waiters were super friendly & helpful all the same. A really lovely family run restaurant. Bit expensive but a treat.

First time visit this week. Thought we’d give it a try. Had the whitebait and the tuna tartar to start followed by moules mariniére and frites. Delicious. We have definitely found a little gem!

Very busy, Thursday really is the new Friday. So the fish soup had run out, oh dear. I tried the whitebait instead - wow! The Rolls Royce of whitebait with some kind of ?wholemeal? batter or crumb, generous portion too. Everything else as good as always, and service held up well despite the crazy busy session - which also made for a great atmosphere.

First time visit …wanted to surprise my friend for their birthday as they love fish Reading all reviews choose here as highly rated so booked our table We unfortunately did not have the best evening 3 diners Sea bass perfect Monkfish tail perfect Unfortunately another monkfish tail was not at so good …. Bones / chewy / not at all enjoyable to eat Asked if everything was okay when plates were being collected Explained the disappointment of the fish on one plate …no apology given just a reply oh okay. Not what I expected …made to feel very uncomfortable for raising the disappointment of the plate It was a Birthday meal for my friend but we could not wait to leave …no other dishes were offered so we paid the bill and left Not the level of service I expected having read such fantastic reviews I was made to feel very dismissive so I will not return or recommend this restaurant as I was hoping I had found a regular restaurant as close to home and fish being a favourite food for me But no even an apology ….where is the service ? Even charged service charge but as I felt very uncomfortable I did not comment at the time but annoyed that I did not challenge the bill based on the extremely poor level of service

Superb and plentiful food - fab service - great atmosphere. Fish taco starter delish. Paella full of taste and couldn’t finish my awesome mussels as the portion was huge!

Booked a meal with friends and was not disappointed. Staff were very friendly. Food was excellent, went for the tapas selection for two and the vegetarian selection for two. Plenty of food and served well.

Another great meal at Matthews with friendly staff and the food and flavours getting even better. Already looking forward to our next visit!
