It was my husband's birthday and it occurred to me that we'd never had South African food before, so I booked us into Chakalaka, a petit et bijou Boer cantina. The decor is bright and colourful and the staff were friendly and helpful. We chose a variety of small plates and sides. I had the chicken skewers with chips, pap, and mushrooms and spinach. My husband had the chicken bunny chow with Biltong to start. My own starter was a sort of cheese toastie with a kind of spicy bean slaw. Washed down with water and two happy hour cocktails, it was delicious. We finished with a shared Malva pudding and the Boer answer to Baileys. This absolute feast came to the sum of £59.50, which was a bargain considering the amount of food and the quality of it. We will certainly return and are already telling our friends about it.
