Ning – Northern QuarterWent here for the first time on a random Sunday eve after deciding that our usual haunt was too far away for us today. We had Sunday roast, I had lamb, g/f had beef and we shared half and half. Both were excellent. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
English Lounge – Northern Quarter3 girs, nice bar, and surprisingly good food! We booked to make sure we could get in - Friday night. It wasn't overcrowded and felt really relaxed. The staff were happy to give us extra time to gossip & deliberate over the menu. Caramelised onion and goats cheese tart was delicious. Steak was cooked exactly as I liked it & staff happy to help with wine choices. Overall they were very tolerant of our slowness which made for a really relaxed evening.
Bluu – Northern QuarterI have never been to a more superbly splendid restaurant; the food was divine and the service simply exquisite. I shall not bore you with details, but suffice to say the interior was aesthetically pleasing and the atmosphere lively and à la mode. Having doffed my napkin, I was faced with the bill - on the word of my associates, I had expected a severe dent in my bank balance. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover nothing short of a reasonable price... The perfect end to a perfect evening. Bon appetite.
Glamorous – Northern QuarterImpressive menu offering a wide selection of vegetarian breakfasts, snacks, and main meals. An excellent choice of drinks is also available. An effort is also made to cater for special dietry requirements (there are different types of milk, for instance). The decor is bright, but without the irritating music that so often goes with it. Service is efficient and pleasant. A long overdue and worthwhile vegetarian venue for the City centre.
Oklahoma Cafe + Gift Shop – Northern QuarterWe visited English Lounge today for Sunday Lunch. Unfortunately they had ran out so we were given another menu. We shared a starter of feta cheese and spinach parcels then main courses of steak frites with onion rings and the hot chicken sandwich. The food was ok but I thought it was slightly expensive at £28 (with 2 1/2 pints of coke) for what it was. The service was good though so I'd like to go back to try the Sunday menu.
English Lounge – Northern QuarterMyself and my partner have visited the English Lounge several times, and have not been disappointed each time! Always friendly staff, excellent food and value for money. Whenever we have family to stay we always go to the English Lounge! Stacey and Dan
English Lounge – Northern QuarterAte there Sunday 6pm after several recommendations. Thought it was brilliant! Great service, atmosphere, had roast beef yorkshire pud etc, lovely fresh veg - very reasonably priced. So impressed I went with a friend for lunch a few days later - again the same friendly welcome - lovely food and very reasonable prices. So much to choose from on the menu, really helpful staff. Great place to eat in town!
English Lounge – Northern QuarterFor a pre concert or cinema visit in the Printworks or a lunch in town, you wouldn? go far wrong with the English Lounge. Now it? not the French at the Midland or Establishment and it? not the arty farty type grub its good olde pub grub at a very reasonable price and large portions too. Add very friendly staff and quick service and it? just the ticket if this tickles your fancy. Accepting that its just a pub, you will not be disappointed.
English Lounge – Northern QuarterWe went to try the happy hour buffet at Sweet Mandarin. The food was extremely fresh and delicious. I liked how we could keep re-ordering from the buffet menu without moving. Exceptional value for money £9.95 each. Also loved the atmosphere and how friendly all the staff were at the restaurant. I will be coming back here with all my friends and their birthdays!
Sweet Mandarin – Northern QuarterVisited the English Lounge after some recommendation from friends, it was a Friday Night, prior to a visit to the local pictures, decided to first read other customers feed-back, after hearing about some good reviews about it on Sugarvine. Was not disappointed had an excellent evening. Was greeted by very friendly waitresses and shown to our seat which was just by the stairs, had a great view out to passing trams. Was spoilt for choice when we saw the menu. After recommendation from the waitress went for the Chicken and Pasta, due to the fact that I knew I would want dips and sweets at cinema. All meals were very tasty and well presented. Sadly had no room left for desserts but looked very good. Will definitely visit again / shame as the film was a total let-down.
English Lounge – Northern QuarterMy favourite bar and place to eat in Manchester. This has been mine & my friends' local now since the start of the year. It took a while to take off after it opened last year but don't they all in the city? We find it VERY chilled with a really friendly atmosphere, Geoff the gentleman who runs it makes you feel like you are actually in your own lounge! They even tell you to signal when you need more drink instead of going over to the bar. The interior is cosy & modern, I do believe that they are getting Air-Conditioning fitted this week. Prices are very reasonable, & they even serve drinks in chilled glasses!! Food is a class of its own.
English Lounge – Northern QuarterPlenty of choice, service with smile and efficient, beautifully presented food, served piping hot. Portions are excellent size, Chinese beer is recommended.
Sweet Mandarin – Northern QuarterI have just moved into the Northern Quarter and stumbled across the Sweet Mandarin. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed the dinner from the Beat the Clock menu and the Sun Lik beer. I would highly recommend this place if you want a friendly, quick and delicious meal at a very reasonable price. Luke.
Sweet Mandarin – Northern QuarterOn entering The English Lounge, you'd be forgiven for thinking you had mistakenly walked into a typical English Pub. The crowd that greeted us seemed to be more interested in relaxing with a drink at the ground floor bar than the traditional English Food we'd come in search of. However, we were led upstairs to the dining area, which is dominated at one end by shelves of Old Books, and decorated elsewhere with Miro and Picasso prints. The buzzy and informal atmosphere makes this restaurant a popular choice for groups as well as couples. I did like the Bar, which was beautifully organized, and well stocked! The food is as British as you'll get, with no concessions to modernity or multiculturality. Expect to see classics such as traditional soups, and roasted meat joints, with all the trimmings. I chose Steak in a lovely peppercorn sauce, whilst my brother opted for one of the menu's more popular choices (as lead to believe by the lovely waiter!) Chicken and Pasta. The waiter taking our order said "The better choice, sir", making my brother beam, and me glower. I dread to think what he would have said if I'd asked for a vegetarian meal. Much as I hate to admit it, the waiter was right. While the Steak was beautifully presented, it was slightly swamped by the excessively rich sauce and completely over-powered by the strong peppercorn topping, the thin slices of chicken in the Pasta and Chicken, where flavoursome and melt-in-the-mouth. Accessorised with crispy fresh salad, it was textbook perfect. With water and wine (from £12/bottle for house white and red to just under £12.50, expect to pay around £15-18 per person for three courses, drinks and service. I believe was a bargain, particularly as I'm not one for the "Authentic Best of British" experience.
English Lounge – Northern QuarterI would highly recommend Sweet Mandarin. It was the best Chinese I have had in a long time and my favourite was the Lilly Kwok's Chicken Curry. I thought it was great that Lilly turns out to be the Three Sisters' grandmother. My husband had the sizzling scallops - plenty, fat, delicious and a real treat. I had several of the Lotus cocktail - lychee vodka which was amazing. See you next time. Liz and Jeff
Sweet Mandarin – Northern QuarterWhat a pleasure to have a decent ''modern British'' place around the corner so to speak. The Northern Quarter is one of those little Metroland gems off the main shopping area and close to the Tram Network. The English Lounge has been refurbished inside with lovely decor as instructed by the staff, fresh flowers and a log fire. The owner oversees the unhurried service and kitchens. The waiters are young but not the usual gormless spotty oiks you often encounter. They offer all sorts of a la carte, bistro, lunch, dinner and prix fixe menus. We went for a Sunday lunch and it was welcoming, with a pleasant family atmosphere. Nice bread selections and for starters we both opted for the Roast Parsnip Soup. Mains for both of us were traditional Roast Beef Sirloin cooked pinkish but nice and crusty outside, proper crunchy roast spuds and a nice selection of al dente veg. We had a nice lightest red wine (can't remember which) espressos and petit fours. Treat yourself to a Sunday in the English Lounge, A further advantage was that we walked home, and collapsed for the rest of the day. Approved fully.
English Lounge – Northern QuarterI must say that this restaurant is a little jem hidden away. We could not find it at first but it was worth the walk. We had an amazing time at the food and wine event to celebrate Chinese New Year. The quality of the food was exquisite - the best Chinese we have had in a long time. I thought the wines were well matched to the food and would definitely be returning to dine again. Thanks girls. Nick
