I have been fortunate enough to visit Alfreds as part of a band and the atmosphere was so good. Returned there to have a meal with my family.

We have been eating here for years and if I am given a choice of where to eat then I will always opt for Alfreds. We live in Merthyr Tydfil which is 12 miles away and distance is no object the food is top class so are the staff and I would heartily recommend it to anyone. Really fresh meat and fish and a wonderful selection cooked to perfection.

Personally, I don't like Alfreds. Have eaten there on several occasions both at lunch time and evening and have been disappointed by the very poor vegetarian selection of foods and their reluctance to deviate from the menu.
Also, I can't say I found the staff/service particularly warm, friendly or welcoming. A shame because it is a very popular venue which could be so much better.

I am very disappointed in the management and security staff at Alfred’s bar & grill. On Friday 18th July 2008, I was having a quiet drink in the bar area downstairs with my friend. A female customer whom I did not know, pushed me off a bar stool from the back. Rather than start a confrontation, I seeked help from the bouncers and manageress on duty. Nothing was done! I was fobbed off even though I gave a full description and told them where the female was sitting. I felt it best to leave and it ruined an other wise lovely evening.

I still love this place after 4 years,no where else comes near it. Food is mouth watering & staff are brill it like eating in new york.

Been here several times...normally eat out in cardiff (Le Monde being a favourite) and this bistro holds its own against the nicer bistros in cardiff. good food, friendly/prompt service and all at a very reasonable price. will definitely continue to go to this great eatery!
Visitor From France
We recently visited Alfreds Bar & Grill and had an awful evening, the staff were badly trained and cleared the table before all of the party had finished eating, even leaning over one of us who was still trying to finish their meal We complained and the owners father was extremely rude. We were visiting this area and would certainly not recommend this bar for the service and hospitality that this region is famous for.

A thoroughly disappointing experience. 15 of us booked but weren't allowed to sit together even though they were able to accommodate this. Paid £14 for a stir fry which was nothing more than a palmful of rice and four slices of duck. It was the first time ever that I was actually hungry after eating at a restaurant. The cheeseboard with the large port was an instant laugh for everyone as I have never seen such a small glass in all my life. If you wanted ice cream or cream with your dessert you had to pay extra. To top it all off we weren't allowed any coffee because our table had been booked for another sitting! We were asked to pay as quickly as possible and move downstairs - a waiter stood over our table to make sure this happened. A costly and poor night out.
