Alghero in Withnell, near Chorley, is an Italian restaurant named after the beautiful Sardinian seaside town on this Italian island – and has been in business for nearly a quarter century. Recently a new team have taken over, with new executive head chef John D'alessandro's wealth of experience in Italian restaurants, he has devised a new menu. It's easy to get to as it's just off Junction 3 of the M65, convenient for Chorley, Bolton, Preston and Blackburn. The spacious, airy and newly refurbished restaurant consists of a central feature fireplace, a conservatory, a lounge area, an open kitchen, new VIP dining area, drinks lounge and in summer there's also al fresco dining. Alghero is a great place to have a party with its lively atmosphere and the buzz from the kitchen. The cuisine is modern Italian. The menu offers small plates for a more social dining experience or for those with smaller appetites alongside the regular a la carte menu. All of the wines at Alghero are Italian and Sardinian. If you're looking for an Italian with a twist, give Alghero a try.
Will not be going again because of the service charge

OMG the best food I have ever had, the staff are brilliant. I go all the time, love love love it there. You haven't lived until you have been and had their food.

The wife and I made a special journey to Alghero. It's a destination restaurant just off the first junction of the M65 and near the M61, which makes it very easy to get to. Bar the road, outside its situated in the country with nice views over the countryside from their outside terrace or conservatory. We had a drink in the bar on arrival and then were escorted to our table in the conservatory by a friendly waiter. Starters were an excellent meat balls and a prawn cocktail, both very tasty and well presented. Mains were a cannelloni and seafood linguine. The cannelloni was the best I can remember having and the wife was impressed with hers too. Wines by the glass were good as was the value. We will definitely return, maybe on a nice summer evening to enjoy the terrace.

Excellent. Not the cheapest but real value for money. The quality of the food is absolutely brilliant and the staff are very friendly. We have eaten here several times and it is my son's favourite restaurant when he is visiting us from Lincolnshire so nearly always include a meal out when he is staying with us. One thing I would suggest though is to request seating in the conservatory area if you like to eat somewhere quiet as the main body of the restaurant does tend to be a bit on the noisy side.
It is always busy, even on week nights but if you wish to dine there at the weekend I would recommend booking to be sure of getting a table.

We have not been to Alghero's for some time but we remember how much we enjoyed it the last time we visited so i decided to book a surprise meal for our Wedding Anniversary. I knew that it maybe quiet being midweek so the atmosphere would not be vibrant but when we arrived there was 2 other couples and 1 more arrived and that was it, but this is no reflection on the restaurant itself as i said it was mid week. My wife and I ordered different courses as we usually do so we can sample each others and get a true taste of the culinary delights. The Starters were fine but when our 2 different steaks arrived they were actually swimming in sauce to the extent that you could not see the steak. I had the Fillet while my wife had the Sirloin and we both like them cooked medium to rare but we both received them medium to well done. Our potatoes arrived on a separate dish which we were served the potatoes and then the remaining potatoes were taken away, Why?? The vegetables also cam on a dish which were not served to us but we had to serve them ourselves (no big hardship) but a contrast to the potatoes!
We ordered a dessert between us which was not brilliant and we both felt very let down by the standard of the cuisine and service level and when we went to pay the bill, the lady behind the till asked us if everything was alright with the meal etc, so when we said NO, she just said " Oh Dear" and that was that!
It maybe just a one-off glitch? as we have enjoyed evenings there before, but it will be a long time before we may consider another meal there!

Fab meal. Fab atmosphere. Fab night.

the welcoming atmosphere is almost as tangible as the smells are tantalising to your nose. the staff are attentive without out being overly so. the food is artistically presented and orgasmic to the taste buds - with every flavour coming through individually and not masked by over seasoning. if you have room and your a chocolate lover (this maybe 1 more for the girlies) try the chocolate velvet truffle dessert its as lightness will not stodge you out. yes the price is a little more than your everyday restaurant with everyday food but well worth it and you only need ti visit any fri or sat evening to see that with the amount of people there it has to be darn good.

The food was very good and it has a lovely lively atmosphere but I am still in shock at the price of a glass of the house wine! 6-60 for a large, and 3-30 for a regular glass!
I don't think i'll be rushing back!

We have been to this restaurant almost every Friday night for the last fifteen years. we highly recommend for the quality of the food, the service of all the friendly staff and because Paul and Carmelo always look after us . the atmosphere is also very italian. In all this time we have been eating here, never once have we had to complain about anything. We promise you will not be disappointed .

I have been here a number of times over the last 5 years. No matter if there are only 2 of you dining, 4 or 15 - you get an excellent service. Amazing food with lots of choice on the menu - you cant go wrong.
Would recommend to anyone - just advisable to book on Fri/Sat evening as it is always busy
