Still run by its original chef-patron, Amigos in Ulverston is a long-established Mexican restaurant and bar at the southern edge of Cumbria housed in a fine old Georgian building. The decor in the street-level restaurant is warm and relaxed with contemporary Mojito and Aztec Chocolate painted walls, soft lighting, colourful linen cloths and Mexican artefacts adorning the walls. The 30-cover restaurant comfortably accommodates both cosy couples and larger pre-booked party groups. The hub of Amigos is without doubt the cellar bar, reached by a small stone stairway. Originally the servants’ quarters, many features have been retained including the cast iron range, servant bells and huge slate slab floor. Chalkboards, Mexican artwork, candlelight and vibrant music make it the heart of the building. A relatively new addition is the walled courtyard which catches the last rays of the evening sunshine and offers a great ‘al fresco’ experience. Contemporary lighting and modern music kick in once the sun goes down and it’s a great place to congregate either before or after your meal. It’s also home to regular outside music events.
