Hidden away in the tranquil Lickle Valley north of Broughton-in-Furness at Broughton Mills, the Blacksmiths Arms is a real gem of a traditional country pub. The squat whitewashed building dates back to the Elizabethan era and has served as the village pub since 1778. The interior consists of four low-beamed and stone-flagged rooms, three of which are used as dining rooms and in one you'll find the original range and fireplace, a real welcome on a cold winter's day. Chef-patron Michael Lane took over the Blacksmiths in 2004 along with wife Sophie who handles front-of-house. The modern British cooking reflects Michael's fine dining roots with starters such as Slow-roasted belly of pork with pea puree and a cider reduction and mains like Roasted rump of lamb, braised cabbage, fondant potatoes and a red wine reduction. You can dine al fresco too when weather permits in an outside dining area that catches the sun all day. The Blacksmiths Arms is recommended by the AA, Egon Ronay, Alastair Sawday, the Good Food Guide, Good Pub Guide and is one of only two Cumbria pubs on CAMRA's national inventory of historic pubs.
