We found this place whilst out walking and as it looked so cosy we decided to pop in. Chesters has a warm cafe feel and serves good quality home cooked food. We had the rib eye steak and the lemon sole, beautiful dishes and at a very nice price. The kind of place we would drop in for an evening meal without the washing up! we both ate for less than £30 and had 3 courses, its bring your own wine which was fab too! The chef is more than willing to alter things if possible to your taste and the waitress was polite and helpful. A delightful evening

We'd been to Chesters a few times having heard good things about their new breakfast menu. The prices were good (£2.95 for a full English with tea or coffee, £4.95 for the larger farmhouse breakfast, also with tea or coffee), and the quality of the breakfast was absolutely fantastic - we'd never had a breakfast like it, anywhere! Everything was perfectly cooked and utterly delicious. Having had such a good experience with the breakfast, we decided lunch might be worth trying. Big mistake. The menu seemed reasonably priced, if a little basic for a place touting itself as a bistro. We decided on 'safe' options - fish and chips, and steak and ale pie with chips. First issue: Despite the place being virtually empty save for a few uncouth types finishing breakfasts, it took 45 minutes before we received our meals. The meals themselves were far from a good portion - there was a handful of (very tasty) chips on each plate, some peas, and the 'main event'. The fish and chips came with none of the extras you'd expect, such as lemon, tartare sauce, and bread and butter/ We even had to ask for vinegar from the waitress, as this most basic of condiments wasn't automatically provided! And once the waitress had decided we'd had it long enough, it was swiftly removed, lest we go on a vinegar rampage. My pie...well, I'm glad the chips were good, because they were the only thing on the plate that tasted good. The pie was all size and no substance, filled with almost pureed meat that I could only call beef because the menu said it was beef. And there was certainly no taste of ale, or even any colour to suggest ale had been near it. My partners fish was little better, being dry, overcooked, and with all the flavour of a dentists cup of pink mouthwash. So for breakfasts, as long as you get there before 10 a.m, they get 5 out of 5. But as a bistro, where you can get a quality meal at a lower price than a restaurant? Absolutely nothing, I'd go so far as to say use Chesters for breakfast, but avoid it after 10 a.m.
The Peche Party
Having read the comments on this website and based on a fairly historic recommendation, we decided to visit Chesters for a special night out. What an absolute disappointment, no disgrace given the disgusting and unhygienic toilets. Food was a complete let down, minimal menu based around " with oven chips ' , key items not available and next to no choice for vegetarians. They have taken the term " home cooking " to a new low. Front of house was overly familiar and decided to eavesdrop and join in, however in an empty restaurant there was not a lot else to do, however she could have usefully utilised her down time by refreshing the toilets. We all felt a little poorly the next day and would nit recommend this place to anyone.
