The Forest Side in Grasmere dates back to 1853 when it was built as an upmarket gentleman's residence for a wealthy Manchester solicitor. Acquired in summer 2014 by Wildsmith Hotels, who also own Hipping Hall near Kirkby Lonsdale and The Ryebeck in Bowness, the dilapidated building and overgrown gardens have now been utterly transformed into a romantic retreat with 20 individually styled bedrooms, beautiful landscaped grounds and a restaurant that was awarded a Michelin star in October 2016. Cumbrian-born Head Chef Kevin Tickle (ex-L'Enclume in Cartmel) is passionate about Cumbrian produce and 90% of the produce used in his kitchen is sourced from within a 10-mile radius, including the hotel's own Walled Garden. The light and airy restaurant is open for dinner every evening with a choice of a la carte and two tasting menus and for lunch Wednesday to Sunday where there is a four-course Table D'Hote and a six-course Tasting Menu. The extensive wine list offers many natural and bio-dynamic wines chosen to complement the kitchen ethos. The Forest Side's 20 bedrooms are all individually styled with six of them dog-friendly. And needless to say, this most romantic of venues is perfect for weddings accommodating 40 guests on an exclusive-use basis and up to 100 evening guests.
