I've been a huge fan of Graveley's for a few years now as the batter was so tasty and the fish was so fresh and big too, but we visited the takeaway section recently and unfortunately it has gone really down hill. The batter was almost burnt and had a different taste to it, the chips were greasy and the quality of the fish wasn't good, plus it was very thin too. We found out afterwards that it has recently been taken over. It's such a shame as this was the best fish

We had a superb meal at Graveleys this week. Even my wife enjoyed it and she doesn't usually like fish. The mussels starter are succulent and the Haddock is the best i have ever had anywhere. The wine list is carefully chosen and not overpriced and the selection of sweets made me (a diabetic) massively envious of the spouse.

If you want 'posh' fish and chips then this is the place to be seen!!
We travelled all the way from Queensland in Australia and had dinner here one night in late September 2009 and we were not disappointed and it was well worth the journey.
The Haddock was cooked to perfection with just the right firmness and the batter was crisp, golden and not at all oily or greasy. Chips were also your normal fresh fare. The curry sauce was nice and spicy without being too hot and the mushy peas were good.
Hats off to the team at Graveley's the 2 elder gents dressed in colourful waistcoats and we were made to feel most welcome.
Don't go here in your dress downs as you will feel out of place as all the customers were dressed up on the night we were here, you could almost smell the aroma of money in the restaurant.
If Graveley's want to expand to Australia I want to be part of the action!!!!

great fish but did not realize they always cook their fish and chips in beef dripping!

Why are all the reviews on here at least 2 years old?
I went for lunch with some work colleagues for a fish lunch and they charged extra for mushy peas, the tea was cold and the staff were very unfriendly. Maybe the fish and chips were good, but amidst all the problems, they were difficult to enjoy.
I suspect the once wonderful Graveleys has fallen into poor management. I certainly would never go there again. I would recommend Oliver's on Cold Bath Road instead - you can sit in too.

I have to disagree all the previous submissions. My experience of Graveley’s in Harrogate this afternoon, 17/5/08, was one of the worst I’ve had in a long time. Initially I was concerned at the slightly sticky table and perhaps not the cleanest of crockery and cutlery. However, the slogan “At Graveleys we ask you to judge by quality, by quantity, by price, and decide if the product is value for money" makes you think that paying £8.50 for Haddock and Chips with be worthwhile. Wrong! While the fish was small but okay the chips were like cardboard and many so crisp on the outside they nearly broke your teeth. They were very oily too. I don’t think I’ve ever had the misfortune to be served such awful chips. My wife had the same with her chips and even a young boy on a nearby table left his chips after saying they were too hard to eat. The service was less than speedy and then the most incredible of all: the waiter asked if the meal was okay and I told him how bad the chips were. He didn’t even go as far as to apologise, just saying other customers enjoyed them and then had the cheek to complain at me, telling me I was being unreasonable! Later when he came back with the bill he offered to take me to see where they prepared the chips to show they were fresh and was still unwilling to concede there was a problem with them. I hadn’t actually questioned their freshness, more like they had been over-cooked. Again, the word ‘sorry’ didn’t enter into his vocabulary. What’s more, on checking the bill, I found I’d be charged £2.50 for an orange juice and then £3.95 for another identical orange juice. The whole place lacks friendliness and professionalism. I’m sure there are plenty of other eateries around Harrogate much more worthy of your custom.

I have to say having read all these recommendations before I went I was expecting a great night. But I was so so so disappointed with everything about the experience. We went for a family dinner and apart from waiting 20min to get a round of soft drinks, the service was slow, rude and without a smile for the entirety of our visit. But once the food arrived this was the least of our problems. The batter on the fish was flaky, crunchy and dry - the chips were not fresh and I suspect reheated. And £12 for chicken and chips for a 9 year old is ridiculous. I won’t be going back again.

When are Doctors going to prove that eating F&C is good for your health? Could VERY happily eat at Graveleys 247 :-)
