Special day ruined! Avoid at all cost! Around the end of November we booked a christening reception for 8th February at the John Gilbert pub. We arranged we would be having a buffet and we would have exclusive use of the raised area in the pub as it was a nice sized space for the number of people we were expecting and it gave us an element of privacy. The lady (I think she was called Becky) who dealt with us at the time took our details and wrote everything down. She told us not to worry about paying a deposit at the time and just pop in a week or so before the 8th of February to confirm our final numbers and our buffet choices, the pay a deposit. We decided to go and sort it a bit earlier on 7th January we went to pay for the buffet and confirm the details. The same lady who made our booking originally dealt with us again. As it turned out our party had been moved to different part of the pub that was far less suitable. All we were told was that the area we agreed on is now taken by someone else who already paid! NOT EVEN AN APPOLOGY. I cannot understand why anyone would do this!? As it was clear to see in their diary the party that has taken priority over us is no larger in numbers there seems no financial gain to the pub or even just a matter of fitting more people in better. We never received any phone call or other form of contact to question our intent of going ahead with the booking or to inform us of the change to the agreed arrangements. Imagine if we hadn’t of come in until 1st of February as advised!? Now due to the total unprofessionalism of the pub we have to find a new venue, have the already printed invitations reprinted and all our potential guests will be getting extremely short notice! This is without doubt the most disgraceful example of poor customer service and truly mighty feat to ruin such a special and important day for our daughter before it has even happened!

Been to the John Gilbert many times particularly like their curry and a drink night on a Thursday but no one could tell me if any of the curries were gluten free including the chef, as they were bought in. Surely if you are classed as a chef you would want to be made aware of the ingredients in the food you are serving to your customers in order to offer any dietary advice if required.

Just visited this restaurant about 6pm had a combo to share then carvery. Have to admit the food was good. However when we arrived it was full and instead of taking our names they just left people to get the table themselves which meant that inconsiderate people jump on tables before their turn. When it came to the carvery we had to wait until the staff got theirs in front of us, their plates where piled high. We were unable to dish our own carvery and when i asked if there was anymore stuffing, (the waitress before me had taken it all for free) i was told no, its coming off now anyway. When my dad got his there was not any gravy left for him. We understand it was 6pm but would of much preferred to have had something else to eat instead of what felt like left overs. We were paying and got the scrapings while the staff got free meals first. Spoke to the manager who was very nice and gave us the carveries for free. Would of much preferred to have paid full price for a nice meal but felt it was disorganised and a free for all the staff.

Simply awful! Tried The John Gilbert carvery on a Saturday evening and experienced the worst meal I have had in a very long time. Indifferent staff on the carvery, dried meats that had been sat under warming lamps for too long, cauliflower cheese that looked and smelt rancid (and should have been thrown away not offered for sale), veggies that were dried out as they too had been standing for far too long, roast potatoes that were not only cold but black and rotten and 'gravy' that was like an oil slick. I certainly won't be returning or recommending this place to anyone. Such as shame for what could be a superb restaurant in this historic building and village.

The food here is terrible, as is the live music, do not go to this place if you like food, drink and live music!!

This is one of the best restaurants I have been to in my life and I go for meals every Sunday. This was very cheap even though it says it's not I would go again even if it was a long way there I would go again more than once the layout of the food was the best, you couldn't find a better restaurant and that? the truth but if you do let us know but I know you wont. The best restaurant in the world!!!
