Just back from a weekend away at Langley Castle for my birthday. It’s in Northumberland, midway between Carlisle and Newcastle, and is the real deal with eight foot thick walls and dating back to the reign of Edward III in the 14th century. It’s just a few miles from Hadrian’s Wall as well as Hexham and its ancient abbey. We ate both nights in Josephine’s, the two-AA-rosette restaurant and were impressed. Candlelit, friendly and efficient service and delicious food including grouse with the start of the game season. Really quite a special and unique place to stay.
