Munchtime at The Malthouse Farm for new years day lunch. Loverly!

I have visited the Malt house on several occasions within the last few years. I would consider it to be a good pub-restaurant within a lovely setting. Homemade fresh meals are fabulous especially the sweet potato chips! Never been disappointed yet.

This great pub is losing trade as the management fails to understand the 'pub product'. This place is not a restaurant in the 'classic context', but a 'food pub' Customers using this type of operation do not want to 'wait here to be seated'; nor do they want to be escorted to a table which they may not like. We all know the system for ordering at the bar. The current management style is damaging the turnover because:
1 As customers now have their orders taken at the table, this denies the business the opportunity to merchandise their products at the 'point of sale'.
2 Customers who only want a drink are made to feel unwelcome.
3 People like to choose where they want to sit.
4 By forcing table service onto pub food diners, this creates an obligation to 'tip', which they may not normally do and, therefore, decline to return.
5 'Pub grub punters' go to places like The Roebuck, The Blundell and The Malthouse for an informal dining experience, .not a style of service that could be construed as 'oppressive'
I did point out these observations to a member of staff who agreed with me, but went on to explain that it was The Manager's wish to upgrade the offer. The Malthouse was operating at approx. 40%. capacity when we left at around 9:30 PM on a Saturday night- which says it all really. With increased labour intensity and falling sales this Manager may not be able to sustain his desired levels of service..which are not required for this style of Pub....thet's what The Malthouse is; A Pub!!

Been there on a number of occasions with different guests. All in all what a wonderful setting next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal.
It has a varied and exciting menu that's a lot better than your average with starters to die for and main meals that are just superb. cannot remember the name of the Italian Merlot but this is one of the nicest red wines i have tasted. Well worth the long walk up from Chorley.

The menu seems more like a pub chain than it used to be, and prices seem higher than it used to for more standardised fare. There isn't as great a choice as previously, and although there is still a specials board the choice isn't as extensive. Went a few weeks ago, early evening, and they were out of all the starter specials. This was surprising as it wasn't busy. In fact, I've been since, and it was also quiet on that occasion. Although food and service ok, the menu and food isn't as good as it used to be. I'm guessing that there has been a change in direction by the management, after all it is owned by a large chain. This is a pity, as it used to give the impression of being more individual.

Great for lunch, well priced with generous portions. Also been in the evening. The menu is varied, with a great specials board. Better than the usual pub fare, and better than the establishment run by the same . hotel chain in another part of Chorley Tends to be busy, but service good. Has an outside seating area adjacent to the canal, wonderful when the weather is pleasant.

Intimate atmosphere for a 'pub' but menu much more varied than your average local, and of a much higher quality. Menu changes frequently and is extensive, from pub fare to more exotic variations. Always busy. One of my personal favourites.
