The best Chinese in the area!! We are regular customers and the staff are very friendly and they make a fuss of us in a discreet 'Chinese' way. The food is delicious and soooo different to the Cantonese food which we also enjoy.

I have eaten regularly at Red Chilli since it first opened, and have been a huge fan all this time. However, I heard that they have changed chefs sometime last year (maybe in the latter half of the year). Sadly, having been back there several times in the last 6 months, I can say that I feel the food has gone downhill. For example, one of my favourite dishes "yu xiang rou si" (shredded pork cooked with bamboo shoots and mushrooms ect - I don't know it's English name on the menu!) used to be somewhat hot and gently sour, with just a touch of sweetness, but now just has a sweet sauce that tastes like a generic Cantonese or (or Shanghainese) dish from a takeaway! The duck is as good as ever, but definitely I feel several of the Sichuan dishes no longer taste very authentic (or even very good). Maybe this won't worry most people (and it needn't, necessarily) but for me, what made Red Chilli such an oasis was the fact that almost all Chinese restaurants and takeaways in the UK all sell Cantonese food - Red Chilli was the first in Leeds to sell Sichuan and Northern style Chinese food - two totally different styles of cooking. A new restaurant opened in Leeds recently called Home Town restaurant, in Vicar lane, just a few doors down from Tong Palace. It lacks the exquisite decor of Red Chilli, but the food is authentic Sichuan and Northern Chinese cuisine, and after 3 visits, I can confirm that they do it well, and the staff are really nice, friendly and helpful. I hope Red Chilli can improve its cooking again, as it's still a real destination restaurant in Leeds, and for the sake of introducing UK people to other kinds of Chinese cuisine, it's been a great ambassador. But check out both of the restaurants I've discussed here and see what you think!

Don't waste your money. Over priced run of the mill Chinese fodder. Service was atrocious, would not bring drinks to the table and starter took 90 minutes to be served!!! They then had the cheek to add a 10percent service charge. Seriously, go somewhere else tampopo is better value for money and better food.

Very, very tasty food - each dish was amazing and had it's rich, individual taste and aroma.
The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming with a surprisingly busy evening for a Monday evening.
However....... yes there is a negative I'm afraid - A VERY BIG NEGATIVE!! The staff were extremely rude and were trying their very best to try and rush us - we were told, not asked but told to have the bill as we had been there too long. When we requested a night cap to finish the evening off the look of disgust from the staff was as if we had tried to leave without settling the bill!
As previous recommendations have said - we would return for the food but definitely NOT THE STAFF!

Visited Red Chilli last night as part of a big group and although the food was OK, the service was dreadful! Staff not wanting to take drinks orders and all three tables getting food at different times. To top it off we were told at 10.20pm that we had to order any final food or drinks or go without - so much for a 24 hour city!

ate at red chilli on a busy Saturday night, party of 7, food and service were both excellent. Couldn't disagree more with reviews which suggest the staff are slow to respond, they were very attentive and efficient. The food was great - my only criticism is that the menu does not offer descriptions - so those less familiar with chinese cuisine aren't sure what they're getting - we had several dishes - some of which were what we expected, others were not! despite this they were all good, highly recommend the aramatic duck - my favourite dish, and the best ive had was here.

To my shame, I did not know of the existence of this fine restaurant until last night. A friend and I was looking for a restaurant to eat in prior to going to a Seasick Steve gog at the O2 Academy. My friend had wanted to go to a Chinese restaurant and I wasn't aware of any near the Academy. We spotted diners through pavement level windows in the Red Chillie and called in on spec.
The restaurant was nearly full despite it being a Tuesday evening and a large number of the customers were Chinese. The menu contained many dishes that I'd not heard of and I wasn't tempted by the lung dish!. However, we found some dishes that were both new to us and were tempting as most of the menu choices were to be honest and had a wonderful gastronomic experience.
Unlike most Chinese meals the two starters (crispy duck and pancakes + Chinese crackers) and two main dishes (crispy stir fried chilli beaf and a spicy mince pork dan dan noodle dish) shared between us were more than ample and for the first time ever in a Chinese restaurant, I left food uneaten, not because it was unpalatable but because the portion sizes were large enough to fill me before getting to the end of them.
The food is great, fresh, visually appealing and the waiters attentive and polite. The meal for two including a pint of lager and a large bottle of mineral water came to £34 - fantastic value! I've already recommended the place to anyone prepared to listen to my rave reviews at work. I'll be back within the next couple of weeks with friends.
