Dropped in here for the first time after a walk from Aira Force around Gowbarrow Fell (incidentally the most stunning views along the length of Ullswater). For somewhere so out of the way, The Royal had an extensive and interesting menu as well as cask marque ales and accommodation.

A real find. Off the beaten track but very handy for Ullswater and the A66. A clean and smoke free hotel with surprisingly good food, and backed up with great friendly service. Highly recommended.

A fabulous meal, with a great selection of dishes from traditional to bordering on the exotic, with ample portions to boot! A fabulously intimate atmosphere with an impeccable service delivered with good humour - an entertaining night it was!

Lovely food - don't be put off by the 'simple' menu - this chef knows his stuff! Sauces were excellent, the ham hock is absolutely delicious - the best ham I've ever had - but you have to be very hungry to eat a whole one! Generous portions. We stayed several nights and were never disappointed. Real beers too.
