Despite living in Weston for over 5 years I had never been to the Sea Palace, mainly due to its previous history of Hygiene problems. However after several articles about the owners cleaning up and the money re-invested into the restaurant I felt it was about time I tried it. The restaurant is large and clean, freshly painted and very ?hinese?with huge murals on the walls and painted in red and gold colours. A mixture of standard Chinese starters where excellent, fresh and tasty. The prawn toast pilled high with prawn, the spare ribs meaty, the shredded seaweed crispy and sweet, the chicken Satay very nice and freshly prepared. Duck and Pancakes came next, they where hot and plentiful (to the point my guests stopped eating it so that they could handle a main course). The main course was perhaps the let down of the meal. Its not that they where bad, its more that the started and duck was so good and the. The meat dishes all had plenty of meat, the lemon chicken clearly had home-made sauce on it and the chicken itself was a soft chicken breast. The duck was soft and tender, even the vegetable dish was tasty (and I? normally a meat eater). The chilli beef was a little disappointing I thought, the beef had been cooked to such a point that the beef had disappeared and all you where left was a sort of crackling, not bad but not what I had expected. Pudding was a mixed bag. My banana toffee looked the part, a 2 golf ball size pieces of dough with a piece of banana inside cover in a crisp toffee coating sounded and look lovely, but let down by the dough not being cooked properly (making me think sunken Yorkshire puds that hadn? risen well). The other toffee dish (apple I think) had the same problem, not bad but not perfect either. I? glad I didn? order the ice cream dessert like my daughter, she thought it was very nice but I? not keen on massed produced chocolate covered ice creams straight from the freezer. Overall a good night out and the feed was worth going for, price was very reasonable approx. £65 for 4 people (including a bottle of wine - no coffees). Service was excellent, friendly and attentive although we dined on a Monday night and it wasn? busy, so given the size of the restaurant I don? know if the service would stand up to a full house. Would go again.
