I went to this pub with friends who have visited many times before and was really looking forward to it. I ordered the Christmas vegetarian cannelloni. Unfortunately the 'cannelloni' was a slightly wetted sheet of lasagna with barely cooked lentils and hard butternut squash with a slither of cheese. Not wanting to make a fuss on a special occasion my friend and I who choose the same dish decided to give it a chance despite our hearts sinking upon the arrival of the food. At this time we were not aware of the pub's policy on complaints (apparently they must be raised at the 'check up' by your server and all dishes will be returned to the kitchen no matter who's meal the issue is with). Had we known this we might have spoken up, but as it was a birthday and Christmas meal with family in retrospect everyone's food would have been whisked away despite them being more than happy with the fish and chips! After trying to eat our meal we raised our concerns but were told it was too late, we should have said something earlier in line with their policy (which to be fair is not advertised anywhere that I could see) and that if we chose not the pay for the unsatisfactory dishes the police would be called! We didn't want this and so I paid £15 for my one inedible main meal. I was gutted and my friends were embarrassed as they had been so impressed on previous trips. I learned my lesson that day - never leave it too late to make a complaint!

Went for a meal last night, service was poor to say the least. People were coming in and being served, when we had placed our order sometime before. The excuse was we have a lot of tickets in, well people should be served in order. Then when chased again its just being plated up. 15 minutes later are meals arrived.. It was only a beef and ale pie and a steak!, so not a lot a plating up. No apology would you like a coffee. The steak was described in the menu as a 8oz T bone steak at £17 when it arrived my wife said it looks like a slice of roast beef a 1/4 " thin. Total meal with wine and drinks £67. One starter two main and one sweet., and poor service/. Will not be going again.

I went with my family to the Shoulder of mutton in Ramsbottom for lunch after a walk up Holcombe Hill. The Pub was well presented but that is the only thing that I could say was positive. We were not greeted at the door or at all for over 5 mins. The Menu was not presented to us and no recommendations made. The food when it did arrive ! over 25 mins !! it was,, all I can say is SMALL !!! A pie arrived that looked amazing but upon getting through the crust was left with a cave size area of pie dish with only five pieces of meat inside !! We ordered the fish at £13.00 which could only be described as a starter !!! One small fillet !!!! And a pudding of Lamb !! Which sounded fantastic but with only Half of it covered in Pastry was a let down. With the Whole Bill coming to just under £100 for 4 For just Mains and drinks. I feel that if you wish to try and serve fine food then you should aim for the whole package!!! Good Food, Good Service, Great Atmosphere !!! Starter - scallops x 2 plus homemade pork crackling and foam !! Very good - Not enough and far too expensive (£6.95) Main - Home made steak and ale pie. Gravy too thin and oily, Steak needed cutting up more and pastry just for show !! 2mm thick and about 20cm above the filling !! Sorry but I like to eat pastry when ordering pie !! Dessert - Home Made Chocolate Fondent Pudding & homemade ice cream. Fantastic !!!!!!!! Service & ambiance Good/bit slow, regulars looked at us as if we shouldn't be there.

Cosy pub atmosphere with fantastic food, which far exceeding our expectations. The mutton & leek suet pudding was so nice, as were the chips which were the best I've had in a while. Sticky toffee pudding was lovely and light, (although it comes with custard, we asked for the homemade ice-cream & they were happy to oblige). Good selection of real ales, and the walk back down the hill into Ramsbottom finished off the evening nicely. Will definitely be going again.

Awful, my parents had visited previously and really liked it and decided to take the whole family there for a little get together, they were really let down, we had to wait an hour before we could even order food as they was apparently to busy and had to stop food for over an hour so being understanding at that time we waited and after an hour we placed our order, we then had to wait for 45 minutes and being starving at that time we asked how long for the food to be told it going to be at least another 25 minutes because they were still busy. We evenly got our food and to be honest it really wasn't all that. None of us will be returning there again and will resort to trying the other pubs in the area, anything would be better that starving for over an hour.

Most of the food OK but when I complained about a rather tasteless dessert, the chef/owner comes out baffled why I didn't like it, starts shouting and explaining he doesn't need repeat customers because how busy he is. We all went for lunch from work and I must say I was dubious but the food was absolutely delicious we all had something different and the food was to die for and the pub is a nice olde worlde pub with a nice roaring fire and the staff where really nice and friendly.

Really nice food not expensive but also not your usual frozen pub food service is good, you will need to book for the restaurant part rather than the pub that can get busy.

went here on Sunday and it was excellent. recommend booking as they were turning people away before 7 who had not made reservations as they were busy. food delicious and good value, childrens menu fine, service friendly and unobtrusive but there when you needed it, worth the trip the young chef has got it spot on and the busy pub showed that. Will be back soon.
