I would not recommend this restaurant as the manger/owner is extremely rude. He started shouting at my wife as she had a discount card for his restaurant.
We contacted the card issuers who said this wasn't the only complaint about the owner and they removed them from their website.
The card issuer was Tastecard, so if you have used it in the past it won't be accepted here anymore.

We called in to Sonali restaurant tonight to book a table for three people whilst across the road having a drink. I wanted to check that they were taking the taste card because it does say to mention this when booking. I was told that they 'didn't like' the taste card but I could use it tonight on this one occasion. I said that they shouldn't be falsely advertising if they weren't prepared to honour our taste card. The restaurant was completely empty when I called in, not one other person eating.
We booked for 7.15pm and were the first people there. The meal was okay, lamb very chewy but made no complaints and asked for the bill after we had finished eating. After looking at the bill, only £12.35 had been deducted not 50%, in fact we should have had £20 off the bill. When I questioned this, I was met with hostility and told "I knew I shouldn't have let you in tonight". I said again that they should not be advertising 50% off the total food bill if they weren't prepared to honour it. I was told that it was down to the managers discretion what he took off the bill, again I said you are misleading people by advertising 50% off then. He was angry, raising his voice whilst I stayed calm and just asked him to take 50% off the food bill. He angrily changed the bill and I gave him my debit card, he said he only took cash, I didn't have any, he wasn't happy about taking the debit card and told me he didn't want to see us in the restaurant again. This was all because I wanted what they were advertising and he had obviously gone off the idea of it...........quite happy to get the restaurant advertised though.
Sonali is still advertising on this website, I want everyone to be aware that they may also be met with the same hostility, from not a very nice manager at Sonali. Go somewhere else, Aagrah a few miles away is a lovely Indian restaurant, they don't take the taste card but nice people and better value for money.

I've eaten at many Indian restaurants over the years, but sonali is the one I return to time and time again. The food is second to none. The staff are friendly and attentive without being in your face all the time. Their takeaway on Kirkgate 'Cottage of India' is also well worth a visit.

I have been to this little hideaway of a restaurant twice and both times have enjoyed it immensely. The food is delicious and a change from some of the standard Indian dishes (only restaurant where I've seen duck lankini) and the service is excellent. Would advise getting there early though as it is rather small and gets very busy.
