Stayed here overnight on the way into London as it’s not far from Cockfosters, at the end of the Piccadilly Line. It’s the former country pile of the Mountbattens, just outside St Albans, and retains plenty of country house charm, particularly in the cocktail bar with its leather sofas. There’s also a spa and fitness centre and the original art deco swimming pool. It’s popular with visiting football teams and one corridor is packed with memorabilia, if that’s your gig.
Foodwise there’s a fine dining restaurant and a brasserie and we had dinner in the latter. It’s quite dark but also quite chic with a buzzy atmosphere and we were suitably impressed. Would recommend if you are looking for somewhere north of London with both good facilities and a bit of character.
