The Fat Duck certainly lived up to its billing of the best restaurant in the world! Well it's the 3rd best now, according to the Best 50 Restaurants Awards. The place itself was unprepossessing. From the outside you tend to expect that from places of this calibre but the inside was nothing special too. Very intimate and quiet and the first impression was one of more staff than punters. This made the service faultless though. A choice of champagne on arrival and then we chose the basic wine matching choice (£90 a head) to match the obligatory 8 course tasting menu. The first offering was a palate cleanser which certainly did its work as it had been dipped in liquid nitrogen. I won't labour on the whole menu but just mention my personal favourites. I loved the Mustard Ice cream on gazpacho, the roasted Foie Gras, the "sounds of the sea" and the snail porridge. However it was the whisky wines gums that did it for me, that had to be peeled off a picture frame that noted the whiskies origin! The meal in total cost £600 for 2 people. Though a lot of money I think it was well worth it and would return. I think my girlfriend must've agreed as she also agreed to marry me!!
