I went to the grill room for the first time a few months ago and was very surprised. The welcome was genuine and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. They went out of their way to get a Red Bull drink for me as they didn't have it in stock but within minutes it was brought in. The food was excellent and all fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection. I have recommended this place to everyone I hear looking for somewhere to eat. Well done to all the staff, brilliant.

Hidden gem is an oft used phrase to describe something which is usually not a gem at all, just something different. The Grill Room though is a true gem of a restaurant and whilst it is hidden from the well beaten city centre tracks, it is destined to become THE place to eat in town.Owned by husband and wife team Stewart and Maisie St John, The Grill Room on Muirhead Avenue quite simply gets everything right. From the moment of welcome to paying the bill, this is the kind of superlative experience that the North of the city has been crying out for. It is a venue that you want to shout about from the rafters, but are desperate to keep quiet about because you always want to be able to get a table. The ambiance is convivial and the front of house team have mastered the art of being attentive without being obtrusive. The very best way to describe the service when we visited was that they provided an excellent dining experience but I didn’t see them doing it. Maisie and her team have mastered the skill of making you feel like the most important of important customers, without the cloying gushiness that seems to have crept in at a large number of establishments . Anyone who has visited a Marco Pierre White establishment recently will recognise The Grill Room’s style which combines elements of Michelin standard fine dining with good hearty eating. There is not a whiff of over technical, intimidatingly fanciful cuisine; just an honest combination of local, in season produce and real culinary skill which give the diner the very best eating experience. The menu contains a select band of mouth watering dishes and that is the only difficulty you will experience – choosing what to have from the well balanced and easily understood descriptions of the fare on offer. The difficulty of choice is further compounded by a Specials Board with even more tantalising dishes to select from. Whatever you choose you can be sure it will not disappoint. It must have been a leap of faith for Stewart and Maisie to open a new restaurant in the middle of a financial crisis and in a part of the city which is not generally associated with fine dining. But the mastery of the front of house team coupled with the undoubted talent in the kitchen, mean this little acorn will soon become a mighty oak - and in years to come, I will proudly boast to anyone that will listen, that I was there at the beginning.
