My wife and I were delighted to find the James Munro whilst looking for somewhere to eat in the business district of town. From the outside it looked like another pretty historic pub. As soon as we put our heads through the door we realised that this was just what we were looking for and managed to find a table .It was a jazz night and I have to say unexpectedly noisy with a live trio including an enthusiastic trumpet. We were greeted warmly and the staff throughout the whole evening were attentive and helpful, All you would have hoped for. The main menu was rather large and extensive which tends to make a little wary(.How much of this can be fresh? ) There were plenty of interesting dishes ad my wife chose crab and prawn cakes followed by pork rump both of which she thoroughly enjoyed. I chose from the daily specials and started with a squash risotto on top of which was a softly poached egg.. I hadn't tried that combination before and it was delicious. The risotto perfectly cooked with just a little bite left in the rice ,delicately flavoured with the sweetish squash and with the egg yolk working it's way through for the main course I had what was described on the menu as "slow roast rump of beef" and was informed that the chef serves pink. That puzzled me but I went ahead. The only dark spot on an otherwise terrific meal. The beef was certainly pink and was also very tough and chewy. I raised it with the staff pointing out that joint like beef rump needs careful slow cooking and therefore was unlikely to remain pink. they commiserated and said they would pass it on. Nothing more was heard. I suspect that the beef had not been slow roasted atl. We finished the meal with a reasonably priced dessert taster combination which was excellent. Overall I personally would definitely recommend this venue..( Just beware of slow cooked pink beef.)
The Masked Critic
We dined on a Tuesday night. The menu was very well priced and the setting was lovely. We had our 21 month old baby with us and we were still made to feel very welcome amongst the other foodies.
We have always gone to the other Monro, this was a pleasant change.
Keep up the good work guys and the great prices!

Booked a table for 4, today 4/7/2010 because we were taken in by advertisements of good food awards etc.etc.
We were extremely disappointed with the food in fact some of it was quite horrid and the highest award we would give would be 3 out of 10 and that is only because the wine was quite good.
Chef came out to the bar as we were about to leave, if we had seen the state of his trousers before we had the meal, we would have left immediately.
I have never left a restaurant review before but I feel so annoyed by the exaggerated hype this place has given itself on the Internet, I felt I had to do something. I would never recommend this pub to anyone!!

I was thoroughly disappointed with the New James Monroe. The service was very slow. We were a table of two, and yet it took 30 minutes for the starters to arrive and another 30 for the mains after that. I asked for some mustard for my steak which arrived 10 minutes later when the steak was almost finished. The food was of a decent quality but was over priced for a gastro pub. Considering the restaurant is supposed to be a New York speak easy, there was no evidence of this theme throughout what was a thoroughly mundanely decorated venue in a location which was stuck out on a limb. I would not recommend anyone to visit.

We enjoyed a beautiful pre theatre meal at James Munro. We had the set menu which had enough choice for the non meat eaters in our party. The Seabass was perfectly cooked and the burgers were enormous!. The service was swift, the food was delicious, the staff were very friendly and the restaurant itself is a relaxing environment that has everything covered. It was our first time but we know we will be back!

Popped in here on Friday night. Even though it was relatively busy and we hadn't booked, we were seated immediately. The menu looks good and the prices are very reasonable. Was slightly disappointed with the limited sweet menu but a small niggle in an otherwise great meal.
Greenmall
The atmosphere was good, limited staff (2 people). Food was ok, service was slow. There was a mobile like ringtone everytime the food was ready, I find it distracting. When I used an offer voucher to pay, the waiter say quite loudly as he was walking back to the get the card machine 'I knew you were going to use voucher'. I think he was saying it in a light hearted way but at the same time it could be taken as slight offence because it made me felt that I could only come here because I am using a voucher. I preferred going to The Monro (Duke street).

Just been the James Monro for a meal
Although we didn't book and it was busy a table was found for us
The staff were very friendly and helpful Many thanks to you.
We had crab & prawn fritter , and Rabbit in tomato sauce to start.
Steak in Shrimp sauce & rack of lamb as our main.
we even managed a sweet fresh fruit salad & plumb tarte.
All courses were fantastic, I love steak but am not fussed 0n seafood but the steak was fab and cooked as required.
we checked the menu out on the web site and to be honest we weren't sure it was for us but glad we went and will go back.
This place is well worth a visit.
