The Old Canteen at Shelley, near Huddersfield, is housed in an old mill that lay derelict for years until Alison and Nicky Wright and Lewis Robinson got together to give the building a new lease of life. They have created a calm and inviting space which can accommodate up to 55 diners with room for another 10 in a decked al fresco area. Head Chef Lewis has built up a wealth of experience at various Yorkshire hostelries, including the two-AA-rosette Wortley Arms where he was Chef de Partie. He sources local produce from community businesses wherever possible and the Barncliffe Brie on the menu is made just 100 yards away. The Old Canteen opens at 9am to 4pm weekdays (and until 2pm Saturdays) serving breakfasts, sandwiches, omelettes, panins and jackets as well as more substantial main courses such as Rump steak with lyonnaise potatoes, a daily risotto and his signature Yorkshire pudding with onion gravy. They also open for Sunday Lunch from noon until 5pm and the first Friday of the month sees a special theme night. An outside catering service is also available.
