We make a point of visiting the Old Wellington for lunch (usually one of their glorious pies) whenever we spend the day in Manchester. The food is lovely, good British comfort food for the most part, they have a good choice of real ale which keeps my partner happy and the staff are great. get a seat on the top floor if possible - right under the open beamed ceiling with views to the cathedral through the leaded windows - perfect!

Long time since I've been to the Wellington - my how it's changed. The list of 'guest beers' is as long as your arm, the wine list looks to be a big improvement and the rooms are just as snug as before. Shame about the food though. The sausage and mash was okay apart from the just warm trio of bangers (hint: a bit longer in the microwave next time) and the open chicken and portobello mushroom pie could have done with more sauce in the pie and hot rather than luke warm and fresh rather than dry looking accompanying vegetables. As I said it's a long time since I was last in there - it'll be even longer before I venture back.

Lovely British food and really outstanding surroundings. The building is beautiful. Check out the very reasonable wine list with some great choices.
