Great iconic Manchester pub with good food and friendly staff. Enjoyed a great pint of Timothy Taylor on my last visit!

AVOID! The Ox has been taken over & is now not what it once was. By a very long mark. If you are after decent food or a gastropub experience, then The Ox is not the place to go. It is now more of a bustling pub - lively & boozy - which is fine if that is what you are after. I had to send my food back twice & the problem not rectified. The problem? The sauce for my sizzling platter, straight out of a packet, not only tasted disgusting but also had not even been mixed properly so I ended up with a mouthful of powder mix - unpleasant to say the least. Despite me sending it back twice & not eating the dish, a refund was not forthcoming - all in all a disappointing experience & really quite extraordinary. Mind you, if you go to a boozy pub on a Friday night expecting exceptional gastro-pub cuisine what can you expect!

Well, it took a little bit of time...but I finally found a place in Manchester that does good quality pub food. I certainly took for granted all the lovely pub and cafe meals you can get in Melbourne, Aus. I would recommend the ox to anyone!

Recommended by a colleague, we have been here twice within 6 weeks and is one of our most favourite places to eat in Manchester. The menu is excellent and caters for all tastes; I especially liked the steamed mussels in a bag whilst my wife loved the cod with chunky chips - not forgetting the home made custard tart which was amazing!
Fresh food, brilliant friendly service, relaxed atmosphere - we hope it doesn? get too big for its own good!
Ox, The
The Ox has a current menu firmly in the "modern british" style. My partner had a starter of crab cakes (spicy), followed by a good rib-eye steak. I had black pudding, on a potato & apple rosti, followed by pork chop with roast vegetable couscous. All excellent. Being greedy, we had side orders of fine beans and a really good rocket & parmesan sald. It meant we were too full for desserts, but managed coffee. Service was excellent throughout. It was great to have such quality food in this relaxed environment. Bill, including drinks was just short of £60, which we felt was good value.

Booked a table on a Saturday night. Arrived early and the helpful staff juggled things around to seat us. Great service throughout, really helpful and friendly people. Food is presented very well and the whole gastropub experience is very relaxed and enjoyable. To find excellent food and service in a "pub" environment is a real treat - we'll be returning soon.
Ox, The
We couldn't face cooking Christmas dinner for ten so someone suggested the Ox. It was a fantastic idea. The food was delicious and great value. It took all the stress out of Christmas day and we didn't miss the washing up or the turkey sandwiches one little bit.

The ox is the future of Manchester entertainment. Away from the pretentious and rammed city centre bars, the Ox is rapidly becoming a new type of bar/pub/restaurant for those in the know who have had enough of rip off bars that take an hour to get served and where the food looks good and tastes terrible. The ox is none of these and is a surprising blend of business types happily mixing with young proffessional urbanites and is also child friendly. The food in my opinion(which I share with my friends) is possibly the best and certainly the most reasonable in town. Whether it be a business lunch or Sunday brunch or an atmosphere for an England game the Ox is not surpassed by any in our city. Keep it up the Ox.
