I have been to The Romper three times now and delighted each time, though at around 7pm so not busy. I have found the service excellent and tend to have a starter and a main course and only regret it because of the quantity.I keep vowing I will forgo the starter but find the goats cheese salad too tempting.

My wife and I visited The Romper whilst on a walk on Easter Sunday 2013. We expected the pub to be busy but found it very quiet. The first table we picked to sit at after buying two drinks we were told that it was reserved, even though it had no sign on. We then moved to another and then the waiter changed his mind saying we could sit at the original table. By this time we had sat down at an alternative table. We ordered dressed crab as a starter and the beef Sunday lunch. Just as the crab arrived my wife noticed her bottle of Becks had a best before date of December 2012, over 3 months out of date. The barmaid changed it for a Peroni. The crab was very nice but the writing was on the wall. When the Sunday lunch came it was swimming in very dark gravy poured over two slices of a braised style beef, Yorkshire pudding and two roast potatoes which appeared to have been deep fried to reheat them. The vegetables were mangetout peas, carrots, broccoli and young sweetcorn. My pieces of beef were reasonably tender, however my wife's were extremely tough and grisly, like it was a different piece of meat. We asked for two different pieces of meat instead. After a wait a re-plated bowl appeared with just as much gravy covering everything again. These new pieces of meat were worse, I couldn't even cut it through. My wife was still hungry, so she decided to try a dessert, bad mistake. The choice of 5 desserts included rhubarb crumble, which my wife had decided upon, however the waiter came back to tell us the lemon cheesecake and rhubarb crumble were not available. My wife chose caramel apple pie with custard. The dessert arrived steaming hot, but when examined the whole 'pie' was a gloopy mass of microwaved uncooked pastry. We sent this back and decided enough was enough. We paid the bill and left, never to return.

The Romper has changed hands quite a few times in the last few years. Up until recently, it was a traditional pub which also had a very nice dining area with beams and a coaching house type of feel to it. The food and service at that time were of a very high standard and so it was that in late July 2008, we decided to have an evening out at the Romper again.
We booked a table for 7pm and on arrival, we were surprised to note that it had changed hands again, this time becoming the Romper Mediterranean restaurant.
Considering that it was a fine Saturday evening, the outside decked area was busy and yet the restaurant inside was almost empty!
Nevertheless we took our table and ordered.
Whilst waiting, I noted the internal refurbishments which, whilst adequate, i felt detracted from the traditional feel of the place and i much preferred it as it used to be.
My starter of Lentil soup arrived and I had the distinct feeling that it might actually be tinned with some garnish added !
Onto the main course, lamb kebabs with rice and salad. No complaints about the lamb, well cooked and tasty. The salad, i think, was from a packet and was limp and not very fresh. The rice was dry and didn't seem to be freshly cooked.
I also had a feeling that my glass of cider was somewhat lacking in strength!
We paid our bill and left. We shall not return and sadly, i cannot recommend the Romper Mediterranean
Frequent Diner
Went to the Romper in Marple, food (and wine) was absolutely first class and reasonably priced, really good choice.
The service was also excellent.
The refurbishment was stunning although I must admit it was very disappointing to find the toilets hadn't been included in the refurbishment programme and these left a lot to be desired.

We went to The Romper off the back of another recent review following the refurbishment (not quite finished - toilets are the last to be done but won't take long apparently!). We had 3 main courses, one dessert (only one of us still had room after the large main courses) and one bottle of very nice wine and the cost was just over £45. We were served promptly and the food was perfectly cooked, well presented and very hot! The staff were very attentive without being intrusive. The surroundings are now subtly modern, but complementary of the old building. They are serving a Mediterranean menu so there is plenty of choice. We will definitely be going back!

After the recent refurbishment, this pub has been transformed into a truly beautiful restaurant. I believe this to be the nicest food I have tasted in Cheshire and South Manchester for years! We have been twice this week and will surely be going again
