The Royal Oak at Winsford near South Molton sits right in the heart of the Exmoor National Park and this charming thatched building dates right back to the 12th century. A former farmhouse and dairy, it has eight recently refurbished ensuite rooms and is a great place to base yourself if you're planning to explore this beautiful part of the world. You can eat here every day between 11am and 3pm and 6pm and 9.30pm in either the bar or the restaurant. All the meat is locally sourced and fresh local game also features prominently on the menu. A typical starter might be the Exe Valley Smoked Trout with Wild Sorrel and Lemon Mayonnaise and popular main courses include the Winsford Lamb Cutlets with Braised Lamb Suet Pudding and Dauphinoise Potatoes. The wine selection includes a choice of classic fine wines ranging from white burgundy and red Bordeaux to vintage ports.
