Fantastic high quality, locally sourced food at very reasonable prices. It has an extensive range of tasty fish dishes and a friendly, cosy atmosphere with excellent customer service. all the dishes were well presented and there is a clear passion for good food. Beer is a beautiful little village too. I cannot recommend this pub enough, it's a real gem.

Wanted to quickly update or 2006 review. The Barrel is going from strength to strength. Luke Hunt has now taken over the management of the Barrel and there is a new chef. The wonderful attention to detail remains and if anything has gotten even better. The food remains wonderful and has actually stepped up a gear. The cuisine is now, daily, on a standard with the dishes that one used to get only on special occasions. Excellent place!

Reading through a local paper I came across a 2-courses for £5 offer and thought I'd give it a try. Having previously tried some of the Times or Telegraph's similar promotions I was not sure what to expect. Here was a very tasty menu with some great British classics, such as homemade Sheppard's Pie followed by one of my old time favourites; Baked Apple. I can only say very delicious! (You can decide between starter and main course or main course and dessert for £5.00, but it had to be dessert for me!) I believe the promotion runs until the end of April and I shall certainly be returning for this one.

What a pleasant surprise. After the themed sameness of so many pubs it is wonderful to find a genuinely unique local pub which is truly family run.
?he Barrel? is situated on the main street of the delightful Devon Fishing Village of Beer between Seaton and Sidmouth. The coast path goes right through Beer and the Barrel is the perfect place to stop for refreshment.
Roberta Hunt and her husband Geoff, with the help of their sons Luke and Robert and Robert? wife Eva have created a haven for the weary wanderer, the jaded tourist and especially for people living in and around Beer.
The bar in small but well laid out with a smoking and non-smoking section. Both are warmed by open fires in Winter and cooled by the sea breezes in Summer. Behind the bar is a delightful non-smoking dinning room with 5 tables - perfect for a more intimate dining experience.
The Barrel has a small but excellent wine list with a good selection of the world? wines, although it would be nice if more of them could be available by the glass. The chef, Robert, trained in some of the finest restaurants in the UK and abroad and it shows. Although on paper the food starts with ?tandard?pub fare, the attention to detail and the quality of ingredients make these a rare treat. The menu though is more wide ranging than this with wholesome specials made from local produce. Flavours are combined with a simplicity that belies the effort that has been made, (the game stew is a favourite as is the locally caught seafood).
On special occasions the evening menus are wonderful with fresh seasonal produce and an atmosphere which is friendly and welcoming without ever being intrusive.
Living now in the USA we make a beeline for the Barrel whenever we are home in Devon.
Barrel Of Beer
I am writing to recommend my local pub:THE BARREL O' BEER to you. Over the last few years, the pub has undergone a complete transformation and now offers a great variety of delicious gourmet dishes.
As part of a seaside village, fish is a prominent item on the menu and I have found this to be no bad thing. A particularly popular dish is the SEAFOOD PLATTER. It consists of oysters, langoustine, lobster, crab, mussels, and prawns and is served on an eye-catching bed of crushed ice. All the seafood is of course entirely fresh really tasty. All the food is cooked to order and presented in a very appetising way, with the menu changing to refiect the seasons. Apart from the great food, the welcome provided by this family-run business is always very warm and you get the feeling that the people really care about their customers, always happy to help out where they can. A reacent addition is the non-smoking restaurant, which is often fully booked and offers table service and more special touches.
The pub has transformed itself from a rather rowdy, drinking pub to a pub, which offers good quality, freshly prepared meals and is definitely worth a visit.
Barrel Of Beer
In this ordinary looking pub lurks brothers who are culinary wizards. The well balanced menu complimented by a confident wine list is well priced and something I look forward to revisiting. With a passion for local food, Luke and Robert show their international experience matched with the essential basic instict of masterchefs in the making. Do not be put off by the pubs name or look, the purely pub decor with a real fire, real locals, real ale and essentially real food is something to be tried.
