My partner and I travelled by train from Manchester to have lunch on 11/09/2009. The pub was clean, cosy and nicely set out. The staff were friendly and attentive without being over the top. We ordered from the 2 course Market fresh menu. My partner ordered the Aberdeen Angus steak burger which he said "was really nice and meaty" the accompanying salsa was lovely as I couldn't resist a taste. I ordered the fish cakes, with Cheshire potatoes and salad. Very fresh and tasty and a nice change from the usual "chips with everything" For dessert I tucked into the apple and plum lattice ordered with lovely ice-cream whilst my partner satisfied his sweet tooth with the strawberries, meringue and cream. He washed this down with a pint of Dizzy Blonde and Tit for Tat (Robinson's), which he says were equally good. Satisfied we headed for the train home. Definitely worth a try!

As one who travels from the Reading area to the North on occasions when I attend soccer matches in Manchester. I always make a food stop at the Smoker. I have always found the food and the service excellent, and I can recomend the Smoker to anyone who wishes a break in travelling on the M6.

The smoker was recommended to me by a friend and since then I have used it several times. I must admit that I am rather fond of the lamb Henry which is a firm favourite with my friends too although all of the dishes are excellent as is the service and the staff are down to earth and friendly especially Margaret whom I think is the owner. My most recent meal was Sunday 7th august 2005 table 15 for a party of five, in fact one of my guests is a Chinese girl (zhuo li) and her partner of which Margaret said if she did not like the sweet it would be replaced at no extra charge. Waiting time from placing your order to being served is minimal and the food is always piping hot, my view is you could spend the same amount at a burger joint? But why bother! When you get this kind of service. I live 1.5 miles from the centre of Manchester, others in our party were my dad Cyril and my friend Steve Morris, this visit to the smoker was in the memory of my mother who passed away 3 yrs ago 27th august. The trip to the smoker is well worth the wait. I strongly recommend you give them a try. Derek Jackson 113 college road. whalley range. Manchester.m16 0ab

Just had lunch at the Smoker and feel I have to let others know what a great place this is. We went as a family and were made very welcome, the menus are as extensive as you will find and all the food is freshly cooked - with an emphasis on local produce. The Beers and wines are kept very well and in better weather there is an attractive beer garden with small children? play area. If you are appreciative of good food and service but avoid the usual "wacky warehouses" like the plague then "The Smoker" is just perfect. Also been recommended for a great Set menu Sunday Lunch.
