We use the Tempest as one of our favourite venues to run our food safety and HACCP training courses.
The food is fantastic (very large portions so be warned). Bedrooms are also very comfortable and reasonably priced - two executive suites with hot tubs! Decor is cosy with plenty of modern, colourful touches.
Make sure you book at busy times otherwise you could have a long wait in the bar as it's VERY popular.

Would highly recommend, very generous portions and the best lamb my partner has tasted. Comfortable, clean and full of character. Will definitely be back

Great food, great wines, excellent real ales, lovely staff. Quite a wide choice on the menu and they have daily specials on the "Hymn Sheet". Generous portions too.
Lovely friendly atmosphere with real open fires and a nice mix of passers-by and locals.
Nice rooms too if you want to stay a night or more.

I would not recommend the Tempest Arms at Elslack. I visited there with my mother at lunchtime one Friday and both ordered a prawn open sandwich at around £6 each. The description on the menu was "lashings of prawns". When it arrived, there certainly weren't lashings of prawns. It consisted of 2 pieces of brown break and butter with a small handful of prawns, iceberg lettuce and marie rose sauce. We also ordered a bowl of chips at £2.50. We were served a half full small dish of pale soggy chips. We sent them back and asked for a fresh "proper" sized portion. The bill came to around £17 for 2 prawn sandwiches, a glass of wine, soft drink and a small bowl of chips. Certainly not value for money, in fact, I felt that I had been ripped off. The service was average and we kept being asked by different waitresses if the food was alright.
This pub is supposed to have a good reputation, but I have been told by a number of people that the food is hit or miss. The menu prices are expensive and I wouldn't eat there again.

My man took me to The Tempest Arms for Valentines. We stayed in a wonderful suite and enjoyed excellent food and lashings of wine and port. Walked it off the next day on a round trip walk from the pub. I would highly recommend this place for a getaway and top class rustic food!
