Being a traditional, old school pub in the heart of Manchester's business quarter the Town Hall Tavern's menu reflects this and is comfortably conservative. Lancashire Hotpot rubs shoulders with Steak and Ale Pie and Cumberland Sausage. The emphasis is on home cooking, the pastry on our steak pie being crisp and thin, the accompanying chips fat and moreish. What let's it down is the little touches at pretension - vegetables served in ramekins, dusting a of cayenne pepper around the rims of plates etc. Oh yes, the word "jus" should NEVER appear on the menu of a British pub unless the owners have delusions of their establishment becoming a gastropub.Prices are very competitive, portion sizes are comfortable and service is casual yet efficient.
