We enjoyed our food. Nice and fresh. The atmosphere was spoiled by many yapping dogs. It felt cold and clinical. Lighting the fires would make it much more ambient.

The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughHad a wonderful evening meal and lunch the following day. Staff couldn't do enough for you. Really attentive and friendly. I would say though that this pub caters for couples and grown up families as we couldn't see any children's menus but there were small children being catered for. Those with dogs were allowed to bring them into the restaurant and were very well behaved. It's a nice little boutique restaurant and the food was lovely. The special was mussels which I don't like. I'm a prawn and crab lover which I would have had if offered. Now our holiday is over we are saving for our next visit and will definitely return to this pub to eat thank you to the staff who made it a lovely relaxing experience.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughTo be honest we were disappointed with our experience, though I might be being unfair, see below. The pub was really nice, friendly staff and allowed dogs inside which added to our experience, however we went there with the kids for a meal. Over half the menu was unavailable as they were moving to a new one in a couple of weeks, and while I accept this might limit some options, to still offer curry but be told there was no rice or naan bread seemed extreme. Also we ordered a cheese burger which came without cheese, when we pointed this out we were given a small tub of grated cheese to add, and politely told they'd amend the bill for us as it had been missed off. That said, the pizzas were made fresh on site and my kids loved them. It might just have been a timing thing but with no other pubs on site it was really disappointing.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughWe booked a table for 2nd Jan, we were staying at The Bay so it was convenient for my birthday. The service was good and the food was produced quickly. The food was just ok, nothing special. The chilli was obviously frozen, you could tell by the texture, the fish was also frozen and not fresh, the chips were not the best. I would go again if we were staying at the bay but only because it was convenient.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughSuch a lovely pub with really friendly staff.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughFab visit on a Friday evening. Open to the public not just for Bay residents. We walked across from Primrose Haven. Simple menu with enough choice for everyone. Service was great, they worked their socks off and always with a smile. Food was good and portions plenty. Few barky dogs but not really a problem. Really enjoyed our visit.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughVery slow service not enough staff at all. Had to wait ages for drinks and food. My husband ordered a period period pizza which came with only 6 tiny pieces of chicken and 6 slices of chorizo for the price disgusting. My scampi was fine. I had a dessert of chocolate and raspberry torte supposedly with ice cream mine came with cream by this time I couldn't be bothered complaining For the price of the meal altogether not good
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughWe have had a wonderful stay at the bay with the only thing really letting it down being our trip to the John Paul Jones. We booked a table weeks ago and were really looking forward to a Sunday dinner out. We had several reminder emails about our booking so when we arrived were very disappointed to find the only menu on offer was the click and collect one and no one had thought to let us know. Had we been called or emailed we would have gone somewhere where we could of had something other than a burger or pizza. My husband was told the limited menu was because the food delivery had been messed up by the supplier, we then overheard someone else being told it was because they were short on chefs so who knows the real reason. Whilst this was disappointing my main issue came later in the visit. I ordered a chicken burger and asked if it was possible to have a slice of halloumi on it as an add on. The gentleman who took our order said no problem and off he went to put our order through. The food came out in a reasonable length of time so no complaint there and tasted fine for what it was. When we came to pay however, my husband did so without checking the individual items and as I was in the bathroom neither of noticed until he’d already paid that we’d been charged £6.95 for the halloumi slice on the burger. I approached a member of staff to query this whose response was “well we don’t do halloumi as an extra burger topping so I’ll have to speak to the chef” and walked off. Interesting response as I’d already had it and eaten it. The gentleman who had taken my order then came back out and said he’d put it through as a starter because they don’t do it as an actual burger topping. I asked him why he’d not let me know that at the time because quite frankly I don’t know anyone who’d be happy to pay £6.95 for a slice of cheese on a burger. I received no apology and no offer of any sort of refund, just an explanation that other people are happy to pay £6.95 for a halloumi starter. I left extremely cross and will not be returning as the staff seemed to completely miss the point that it actually wasn’t the cost that annoyed me it was that they didn’t communicate appropriately and then behaved as if I was in the wrong for questioning why I had been over charged. Very poor customer service and a real let down for what is otherwise a very good holiday site.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughThis was our second visit this week and our last visit was great. This experience was very different. We had a really long wait for our drinks order to be taken. We then had a really limited menu (the click and collect) menu because they had an issue with the lack of chefs. When the food arrived items were missing that the limited menu advertised. We weren’t given an explanation prior to our visit even though this has been booked for weeks. We had to wait over an hour to get our meals. This reminds me of the inconsistent service in the past. Such a shame.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughWe booked a table 4 weeks prior our reservation on the 29th May 2021 at 6pm, we arrived on time, and was told we had a hour wait, which too be honest we said ok as it was quite busy, we should have vacated by 8pm, we ordered drinks and food and expected our food about an hour later, 7.30 came still no food, we did realise people was coming in and leaving after been told they was a 2hour wait for food, not one member of staff came upto and explain the situation, we did notice people outside who arrived after us was getting there food quicker than us, we brought this too a young lady who basically said no they not, so when i asked the question that a party who had sat 1/2 after us why they got they food before us she couldn't get away quick enough, we also noticed a lot of people was getting food by click and collect, can't understand why click and collect service is still available when pub is fully open. It definitely came across that those who booked tables were definitely getting neglected, if we had realised earlier we would have said not too bother with our meal, but because we booked so early we thought we would have been prioritised, but obviously not, they was no communication whatsoever with staff, until we asked question, when we asked about our meal she said the pies looked crap so was put back in oven, we asked about our time slot as 8.00 came and we still had no meal, by this time we was absolutely starving and my mums sugar levels was dropping as she diabetic, luckily we carry things for her, but thats not the point, people started complaining as no communication from staff at, and they was still taking orders for folk just turning up, they should have stopped all orders and concentrate on the orders which had been taken, when we eventually got our meal, peas looked over cooked, the pies were basically microwaved, the meal was rubbish, all we was offered was free sweets, which we didn't take our bill was over £100, too be honest we wished we walked out like everyone else, the whole experience was awful definitely will not be going back, i begrudge paying the bill as the food wasn't worth the money.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughA truly dreadful experience, after reserving a table 2 weeks prior to our visit, we were allocated a 2 hour slot from 7pm. After ordering from a very limited menu of only pizza, burger or scampi, 1 and a half hours later we were still waiting for our food with 3 very hungry children. The front of house staff did not advise us that there was going to be a delay, we had to ask how much longer our order would be, only to be told that "the kitchen staff needed a kick up the backside" and could not cope. After walking out the assistant manager approached us, only to agree that the "chef" and his brother were useless and had previously walked out the night before. Do not waste you time or money visiting this place as we ended up with cheese on toast at gone 9pm instead of a lovely family meal after 14 months of lockdown
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughWe booked for 6pm but had to queue for 20 mins. The menu was much reduced and even then some of the items left were not available We were waiting for more than an hour for the food and when it came some of it was cold.. Very disappointed although the waitress tried her best it was not her fault. The problem was takeaways taking precedence.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughThis was our first visit to this pub and our first meal out indoors for 8 months due to covid. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. Had to wait 20mins in a queue to get in the building, even though we had booked in advance. Reduced menu, a lot of meals had sold out. Took over 1hr for our food to arrive, it didn't seem busy. Quality of food was average and it felt over priced. The waiting staff tried their best, polite and friendly.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughNot good. Booked for 4pm on Sunday and were given Sunday lunch menus, only to be told. Sunday lunch had finished and there was none left. We weren’t given the evening menu which other tables clearly had. Food took an hour to arrive - even though it wasn’t busy. Nachos had barely any covering but worst of all was the big lump of plastic in my mash potato. On telling the waiter he took it away to tell the chef - then never came back. When another server came I asked her about it she was very apologetic and offered to take the meal off the bill - which was fair enough. Would not recommend and won’t be back.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughWe owned a house at The Bay for 11 years and have visited The John Paul Jones often. We went 30th May again and this the best experience of all. The pub is newly refurbished which was more than in need of. The pub was packed and the staff customer service was also the best we’ve ever experienced there. The new online booking is fantastic. The food was generous and nice. The prices have gone up a bit but that’s to be expected. Special mention to George our waiter he was brilliant.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughMeal was nice, waiting time between order and receipt of meal was around one hour which we were not informed of when arriving. The pub was very busy but as you had to pre book surely this could have been foreseen. The most frustrating part was getting the bill, we had to ask four times before receiving it. Portions were on the small side and were quite expensive at around £12.50 for standard food.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughService good. Food distinctly average. £25 for a Iceland curry with doritos? and pie and mash with seasonal veg, oops sorry peas. 2 for a tenner in Wetherspoon's. Sorry but all fur and no knickers.
The John Paul Jones Pub – ScarboroughThe menu was very very reduced. To only 3 items, 2 of which were fish so very limited choice. Not told about the reduced menu when we sat down. Staff very attentive and friendly but waited over an hour for food and with two small children this wasn’t ideal.
