A wonderful place to stay or to eat. Their little Bistro which is the tea room during the day is particularly good. (But it isn't open every day at night.) Best steak and great chips I've had in ages. Well worth a visit. As a place to stay its expensive but luxurious. Staff are fantastic. You can eat there if you are a non resident.
Black Swan Hotel – YorkWe went for dinner here while staying in a holiday cottage nearby. I was very much looking forward to our visit as I had heard of this Inn and was aware that it had been awarded a Michelin Star. First impressions were very good, we had a drink in the main bar and were brought an amuse bouche while we looked through the menu. The draft beer in the bar got the thumbs up as did the friendly service. We were taken through to the main restaurant part of the Inn and shown to a luxuriously large table, set with a vast array of cutlery. The decor in the restaurant was not as charming as the more rustic bar, it was, to me, a bit cruise liner, but what really let the dining room down was that it was not clean. There were food stains (looked like old mashed potato) on the fabric dividing panels which had clearly been there a while! The bathroom was nice but the basket for the hand towels was almost empty and therefore clearly full of dust. Minor things, but I expected so much better. Also there was only one ladies loo, and for the number of covers this seemed insufficient. The food was the main point though, and everything we had was very nice, but not earth shattering. The menu didn't offer any surprises, but if you're looking for posh pub grub then this is spot on. The table service was good and we were made very welcome, but overall, we probably won't make a repeat visit.
Star Inn – YorkI love this restaurant! The location and setting is really unexpected and very lovely. We first went on New Year's Eve, and made a last minute table reservation. We had a special set menu which included some really exciting things I would probably not have thought to order off a menu, such as chicken wrapped in banana leaves and fried (amazing!). On other visits since, we have never been disappointed, the food is always delicious and beautiful, the service excellent and the price reasonable. We may well go back again this new year!
Sangthai Restaurant – YorkWe went in this restaurant on a Wednesday afternoon as soon as it opened at 5pm. We received excellent service throughout, the restaurant was clean and comfortable, and the prices very reasonable. The food was the real star though, we had a main course from the barbecue/grill and a traditional main course, as well as mixed meze starters, and everything that came was delicious and very good quality. I would order everything we chose again, but would really like to work my way through the entire menu! We will definitely be going again!
Kapadokya – YorkVisited recently, would never go again, had to wait 45 minutes for starter this was at 7.30pm and only half full. Service very poor they virtually threw rice on to table, food average. had to ask for cutlery, staff off hand. When clearing table dropped dirty cutlery on laps of customers, no apology. Back to the Viceroy and Jinnah for us
Saffron Desi – YorkNot recommended. Food quality was poor and cold. Real ale was off! Does has good view of minster rooftops, but comes at a price as surroundings are dirty.
Habit, The – YorkI have visited Tassili twice in the last month and have been amazed by the ambiente and quality of their food and service. Dining at Tassili makes you feel as if you are on holiday, the decor and accessories underpin the oriental flair. The service is perfect, staff are attentive yet not intrusive and the choice of different dishes is excellent and the food tastes superb. I particularly liked the option of ordering a starter as a slightly bigger portion - ideal for a late meal. I would highly recommend a visit.
Tassili – Yorkthe best Italian food in York. lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, definitely will be back there soon.
Mamma mia – Yorki go to the Black Bull all the time and I love it !! There fish and chips are amazing!! specially followed by there freshly made beautiful sticky toffee pudding!! Or if a quiet drink is what your looking forward to its perfect with a great ales, beers and wine. I would recommend any body!!
Black Bull – Yorkwe were recommended the olive tree by the Saxon house b and b in york.we wanted somewhere extra special because we were in york for my treat weekend for my birthday. yes it was dearer than any other place we had been but it was worth every penny the food was the best I've ever tasted and the service was extra special too thank you for a wonderful birthday meal .
Olive Tree – YorkOscars is always a pleasant place to eat and the food and wine is always at reasonable prices. very enjoyable
Oscars Wine Bar and Bistro – YorkVery good meal in a lovely setting, food was of a high standard and service was excellent, very friendly and helpful staff.

Wetherby Whaler – YorkWe have been visiting the Go Down for many years, the food and service is always excellent and probably the only restaurant my husband will go to in York. It was so good that we got married 3 years ago today (9th February) and asked Peter and Penelope if they would 'do' our wedding reception. We had a wonderful meal for 30 guests and they still talk about it now. Can't get better than that. Unfortunately cannot go tonight to celebrate but will be back there next week for my birthday.
Go Down The – YorkSomething a little odd about the reviews here. The Living Room clearly not by any stretch the 'best restaurant in York' - it would say so itself (the possible best is J Baker's BTW). It should be a cheap(ish) corporate place. Food is mainly adequate but can be poor eg over cooked veg seems a speciality. Drinks should be treated with care - any place that uses open 'old' Champagne in cocktails must be viewed with suspicion.

Pig and Pastry – YorkMy family and I had Xmas lunch here this year. 25/12/10. We were really looking forward to it but the whole experience was terrible. Staff were rude and kept us waiting in the car park before allowing us to go in. There was a mix up with the starters, some of us were served and others not. The food was only average. What this venue needs to take on board is that Xmas lunch is an experience and this was sadly lacking. Shall not be returning
